CHEESY BREAD BOWL PIZZA DIP

Is there anything better than melted cheese? I’ll wait while you think of something… because I’m pretty sure it’s on the top of my favorite foods list. I feel a little extra inspired to come up with decadent recipes during the holidays. I’ve been testing some fun appetizer recipes because we’re hosting Christmas at our house this year! My Frankenstein appetizer creation was born as a result of accidentally ordering an extra loaf of sourdough bread and randomly having too much mozzarella cheese. Bread Bowl Pizza Dip is exactly what it sounds like. Ooey gooey, decadent dip made of all things pizza. Stuffed in a loaf of bread, that turns into a flavor boat / bowl. The best part? You can eat the bowl!

BREAD BOWL PIZZA DIP

As always, I like to focus on easy recipes. I’m not trying to stress you out with 50 steps, a bunch of crazy ingredients or any confusing machinery. But IMO, cheesy pizza dip should not be a backbreaking, angering task.

This recipe is no exception. I wouldn’t even call it a recipe if it stresses you out thinking about trying to cook. Because all you have to do is mix a few ingredients together, cut the center out of the bread & bake!

The secret ingredient to my pizza dip is Jalapeño Pub Cheese. Most dip recipes call for cream cheese, which is good. But using pub cheese takes it to the next level. If you’ve never tried it, pub cheese is a type of soft cheese spread and dip made using cheese as a primary ingredient and usually with some type of beer added. It can be made with smoked cheeses or liquid smoke added to give it a smoky flavor. Jalapeño pub cheese is made with aged cheddar, milk, cream and jalapeños. You can find it in the cheese section at any grocery store or on Amazon.

The other ingredients I used are marinara sauce (you can pick whatever kind you want), mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese & miniature pepperoni. Originally I used one cup of mozzarella, but when I remade it a second time, I opted to add an extra cup into the pub cheese. You can also use pizza sauce instead of marinara, it all depends on what you have on hand or your preference.

I like using a sourdough loaf of bread because it’s extra “crusty” and I prefer the flavor. But you can also use a loaf of soft Italian or French bread. You just want to make sure it’s big enough to turn into a “dip boat”.

I also like using the bread that is cut out to make soft crouton dippers. If you don’t want to use it, you can use crackers, chips, etc. to scoop your dip!

It’s the perfect appetizer to serve for family and friends, especially during the holidays! It will leave everyone feeling warm & cozy and asking for seconds!

This Bread Bowl Pizza Dip is so easy and a crowd pleasing appetizer!

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of sourdough bread
  • 8 oz container of jalapeño pub cheese
  • 16 ounce jar marinara sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozarella
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese
  • miniature pepperoni
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • salt & peper

Instructions

  • Position a rack in the middle of the oven; preheat to 400 F. Cut out the center of the bread, leaving a 1-inch border. Using your fingers, hollow out the bread to leave about 1 inch at the bottom.
  • Place the cut-out bread on a work surface. Cut it into rectangular pieces to use as dippers. Place on a large baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle garlic powder on top. Bake for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.
  • While your dippers are baking, combine the jalapeño pub cheese and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Place your hollow bread bowl on a baking sheet. Pour tomato sauce into the bottom of the bread bowl, depending on the size of your bread, you’ll want to fill about 1″ with sauce. Then, pour your pub cheese mixture on top. Top with remaining mozzarella, parmesan and miniature pepperoni.
  • Place the bread bowl in the oven and bake for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese starts to bubble. If you have a broiler function in your oven, broil for 1-2 minutes to make the cheese brown.
  • Remove from the oven and serve with the bread dippers! You can also add pita bread, crackers, chips, etc to the serving dish.
