How to Make BBQ Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs
As the old saying goes… everything is better with bacon. I mean seriously. Think about it. Cheeseburgers, salads, eggs, breakfast burritos, even chocolate chip cookies. All better with some bacon. Especially Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs!
Now that it’s summer, I avoid cooking in the house at all costs. Not only does it make our house a million degrees, I like the excuse to hang out outside and fire up the grill. We love bbq’ing and I’ve made an effort to work on my grilling game.
Burgers and hot dogs are great, but bacon wrapped hot dogs are on a completely different level. And what makes bacon wrapped around a delicious hot dog even better? A little TRUFF sauce.
For those of you who haven’t tried TRUFF yet, it’s basically the best hot sauce ever. It’s a combination of peppers, spices and you guessed it TRUFFLES! They have their OG black truffle version and a new extra hot jalapeño version that’s great if you want a little extra heat!
How to Make Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs on a BBQ
I like cooking my hot dogs, especially bacon wrapped ones on the grill. Not only is is easier to clean up, it gives them an extra smokey flavor and keeps them from getting too greasy.
You can use any electric, gas or charcoal bbq. We like our Weber Spirit electrical grill because it’s easy to use, compact & heats up quickly. If you’re looking for an awesome, versatile grill that will fit anywhere (literally will even fit on an apartment balcony & can feed a crowd), I highly recommend it.
Ingredients
- Hot Dogs: I like all beef franks. Use whatever you want though! Turkey dogs, vegan dogs, you name it!
- Bacon: I use center cut bacon because it cooks evenly and has a ton of flavor. But you can also use turkey bacon or smokey tempeh! You’ll need one piece of bacon for every hot dog.
- Buns: Pick whatever kind you like! Just make sure you have enough for every bacon wrapped hot dog.
- Condiments: I like TRUFF sauce, but you can use whatever you like! Hot sauce, Sriracha, Ketchup, Mustard, Mayo, Relish, Onions, Peppers… you name it!
Directions
- Preheat your grill to low-medium heat. If you’re using a charcoal BBQ, arrange your coals on one side in a shallow formation.
- I like to use toothpicks to keep the bacon on my hot dogs. An old trick my dad (big Jim) taught me is to soak your toothpicks in water for about 15 minutes so they don’t catch on fire on the grill! Wrap each hot dog with one piece of bacon and use a toothpick on each end to hold the bacon in place.
- To ensure thorough crispiness, I like to cook my dogs in quarters. Meaning I flip them four times to get every side extra crispy! If your grill is set to low-medium heat, you should only need to cook each side for about 2 minutes, or 8 minutes total. You’ll have to gauge it by how cooked the bacon is.
- Once they’re cooked, remove them from the grill and let them cool slightly before removing the toothpicks. Serve and enjoy!
