AT HOME BARISTA: HOW TO MAKE WHIPPED COFFEE

AT HOME BARISTA: HOW TO MAKE WHIPPED COFFEE - erin aschow - ice cream & neon dreams

I was reluctant to get on TikTok, but here I am. Quarantined and uploading videos of Doug in costumes. Thank god I got on in time or I wouldn’t have discovered the hottest new trend in home coffee making… whipped coffee!

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m a coffeeholic. It’s the life force in my veins. So you can imagine how skeptical I was when I saw people making some weird foamy coffee drinks.

But for real… whipped coffee is one of the most amazing inventions. And it’s popularity couldn’t have come at a better time. We all need something to feel excited about right now. It just so happens that this is in caffeine form.

How to Make Whipped Coffee

first things first, WTF is Whipped Coffee?

Whipped coffee (also called Dalgona coffee), is a three-ingredient drink recipe named after a Korean honeycomb toffee dessert.

It’s actually not a new creation though – it’s base on an Indian drink known as Phenti Hui coffee (or beaten coffee). The only difference is that when you make Phenti Hui, milk is poured on top of the whipped mix, rather than spooning the whipped coffee on top. We can get into all of that later…

But the whipped coffee you see all over TikTok and Instagram went viral when a South Korean actor named Jung Il-woo visited a restaurant in Macau where he saw the drink. Then, showed it off on the South Korean TV show Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant.

What is in whipped coffee?

I made my first batch of whipped coffee and filmed the entire thing – you can watch the TikTok video here.

Then, “whipped” up a batch on my Instagram Live Virtual Happy Hour. It’s definitely a lot easier to make if you have a mixer. Whipping it by hand would take forever.

It’s only 3 ingredients:

  • Instant Coffee
  • Sugar
  • Milk
  • Hot Water – which I don’t count as an ingredient because you don’t need to buy it

What kind of sugar can you use?

I recommend using granulated sugar. You can also use brown sugar, raw sugar, coconut sugar or a sugar substitute. Just make sure it’s granulated and not liquid.

but Can I make whipped coffee without sugar?

Yes you can technically. But, it won’t fluff up as easily and won’t stay fluffy for as long. It will also be a lot stronger tasting because it’s not sweetened.

Crap, I don’t have a hand mixer. can I still make whipped coffee?

Yes! You totally can, it will just take a lot longer. Some people have showed their hand whipped creations and said it takes around 12-15 minutes. You’ll want to use a hand whisk, not a spoon. And do it in a bowl, not a cup.

Should I use hot or cold milk?

Either one! Whichever you prefer. If you like iced coffee, use cold milk. If you like hot coffee, heat up your milk and then put your whipped coffee on top. You can use any milk – dairy or non dairy. It’s totally your preference.

What instant coffee did you use?

I used this organic instant coffee I bought on Amazon! But you can use any kind, as long as it’s instant (yes decaf works too).

What Other fun ways can I use whipped coffee?

  • Use it as a topping for ice cream
  • Bake cookies and dip them into it
  • Use it as frosting on a cake
  • Sandwich it in between two cookies

Instructions for making Whipped Coffee

To make whipped coffee, combine 2 tablespoons of instant coffee, 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of boiling water in a bowl. Using an electric mixer or a hand mixer, whisk/whip for about 2 minutes. Basically, until it get’s really thick and you’re ready to serve it.

If you’re vegan, you can make your whipped coffee vegan, by using a non dairy alternative like almond milk. After you’ve made the whipped coffee, pour some milk into a glass. Then, use a spoon to scoop or pour some of the whipped coffee on top, then stir it into the milk to combine.

It’s technically a lot easier to mix if you pour the milk over the top, but not as pretty or photo worthy. I like pouring my milk over ice cubes to keep it nice and cold. Move over coffee shop, let’s become at home baristas!
