how to make a diy scarf top with a chain necklace
I’m back with some fun, crafty style tips! I love a good fashion hack, clothing upcycle or trick for upgrading an outfit. You don’t need to know how to sew or have any experience for this fun fashion project. Today, I’m going to show you my favorite trick for making a DIY Scarf Top. All you need are a pretty scarf, a chain necklace & some sewing tape.
HOW TO MAKE A DIY SCARF TOP
I’m kind of obsessed with silk scarves. Maybe it’s my inner 75 year old woman screaming to let her wear leopard print jumpsuits and bedazzle a golf cart.
Wearing scarves around your neck like a middle PTA mom is sooo 1995. Chic silk (or imitation silk) scarves are the go-to summer accessory for fashionistas. You can wear them in your hair, turn them into a headband, wrap your head with one, accessorize a bag, tie one up and turn it into a bandeau top… the possibilities are endless!
But I felt like getting crafty and using one of my scarves to create a more elevated outfit. I’m a huge fan of chunky gold chain necklaces, they’re an easy way to elevate a basic graphic t-shirt or simple black tank.
So I thought I would show you how I use a scarf, a chain necklace & some double stick tape (aka sewing hem tape) to make a stylish halter top for summer!
Grab a Cute Scarf
I found this super cute, black chain pattern scarf from SHEIN for only $3.50! SHEIN has a ton of cute options for around $3. I’ve also found some really fun scarves that are inexpensive on Amazon. There are no rules, use something you already have or pick a color/pattern that you like.
Keep in mind that the bigger the scarf is, the more coverage you’ll get.
Find a Chain Necklace
Next, you need to find a chain necklace. Again, my layered gold chain necklace is from SHEIN and was $3.50. If you didn’t do the mental math, that means the top only cost me $7 to make!
You can use a single chain, layered chains, gold, silver, whatever! I personally like the look of having some of the other chains overlap. I even found some cute acetate & pastel options!
The longer the chain you pick, the lower cut the neckline will be.
How To Make Your Halter Top
This is where normally any craft project might get intimidating. But don’t worry, there’s no sewing involved!
Take your scarf and fold it in half (into a triangle). Make sure that you’re folding it so that the “right side” is facing out. AKA, the side you want people to see.
Place the chain necklace on top of the scarf (the top of the triangle). If you’re using a layered chain necklace, decide which chain you want to secure the scarf to.
Place a small piece of sewing tape (you could technically use any double stick tape here, or even a fabric glue) below the chain.
Fold the top corner of the scarf down. I chose to fold it once above the chain, and a second time to adhere to the tape so I would have a clean seam. But it’s not entirely necessary. The goal here is to fasten the top triangle to the fabric – holding the chain in place.
If you don’t do a “double fold’, you’ll need to sue a second piece of fabric tape to fasten the other side of the scarf (or it would just flop open).
To put it on, clip your necklace around your neck. Then tie the bottom sides of the triangle behind your back. For a more cropped look, roll the hem before tying.
