How to Make DIY Le Labo Santal 33 Perfume for

I am a major perfume girl. I remember getting my first “perfume” in middle school, aka Bath & Body Works Cucumber Melon body spray. Over the years, my scent choices have evolved. And at the risk of sounding basic, I cannot live without Le Labo perfumes.

My all time favorite scents are from Le Labo. And I absolutely LOVE Santal 33. But it has a HUGE price tag clocking in at $280 for a 3.4 oz bottle. I’m sorry, but thinking about spending $300 on something that I could drop on the ground and disappear into thin air makes me feel light headed.

I normally just stock up on travel sized bottles and reserve spritzes for special occasions. I’ve had normal size bottles of perfume in my cart multiple times, ready to make an impulsive purchase. But can never follow through because the price is so insane.

So during my quarantine crafting, I had the GENIUS idea to whip up my own DIY Le Labo perfume!

Are you ready for my diy le labo hack!?

Santal 33 is by far one of the most famous fragrances on the market.  The figgy, leathery sandalwood scent is the smell wafting in high-end hotel lobbies and worn by celebrities like Meghan Markle and Brad Pitt.

What it is:

It’s safe to say that Santal 33 is the icon fragrance of an entire generation, male and female. But what does it smell like? The iconic blend of sandalwood is made up of 33 ingredients.

The brand likens its aroma to the vibe of an old Marlboro ad, rich with notes of cardamom, iris, violet, cedarwood and sandalwood.

The top notes are violet accord & cardamom. The middle are iris & ambrox. The base are cedar wood, leather & sandalwood.

the secret ingredients:

The key ingredient for DIY Le Labo perfume is this essential oil from Amazon. Technically, you could just use the oil directly. But to give it a perfume consistency, you need to water it down a bit.

The best way to dilute essential oils into a perfume is by adding alcohol. Yes, you read that correctly. Most people suggest using isopropyl alcohol but not only is it almost impossible to find (thanks to everyone making homemade hand sanitizer), but you can use a different type of alcohol that you probably have stocked in your bar.

VODKA! That’s right, you can combine any essential oil combination & vodka to create perfume! Vodka can be used in perfume making because it’s clear and doesn’t have a particularly “boozy” smell. Adding alcohol also increases the dispersion of the perfume molecules and makes the scent last longer when you wear it.

To package your DIY Le Labo fragrance, you need an empty rollerball bottle or or spray bottle. I filled the bottle up about 1/2 way with oil and then filled it to the top with vodka. Using a funnel helps!

The bottle of essential oil should make about 4 batches of perfume. Meaning each bottle costs about $4 to make! So much cheaper, right!?

You can also use the essential oil in a diffuser to make your house smell like Santal 33.

The scent is very similar (if not identical to) Santal 26. They’re similar smelling – so if you’re looking for a hack for your signature scent, the same oil works.

Making your own perfume with essential oils is also a great eco friendly option because you’re limiting the number of ingredients & packaging used.
