DIY Sparkly Sequin Christmas Tree Ornaments

DIY Glittery Sequin Christmas Tree Ornaments

THE DIY queen is back! I love a good holiday DIY project. Just like I love wrapping presents and baking cookies, doing fun and creative Christmas projects gets me into the holiday spirit! I stumbled upon some majorly Instagram worthy Christmas tree ornaments on CB2 a few weeks ago, but was bummed when I realized they cost $5 each! Sorry, but if I wanted to cover my entire tree with sparkly sequin ornaments, it would cost me like $200. And that’s just not happening. So I put my DIY thinking crown on and came up with a super easy, super inexpensive DIY version!

The best part is that you can customize them in any color scheme you want! I have a whole “punk rock Christmas” theme going on. So I made a lot of silver and black ornaments using silver and black sequins. If you want to stick with a specific color, you can order individual packs of sequins. If you want a fun assortment, you can buy a variety pack of sequins (I bought mine on Amazon).

It’s a super fun and easy DIY project that doesn’t take a lot of time or skill (which is great if you don’t consider yourself a craft master. You don’t even have to limit yourself to hanging them on your christmas tree! I love putting Christmas ornaments in bowls, on our coffee table & around the house!

If you made my DIY black glittery ornaments last year, or a lot of my other DIY projects, you’ll be happy to know that no spray paint is required on this one! You don’t need to buy styrofoam balls, a hot glue gun or any fancy equipment.

I use the same craft glue on the majority of my projects and can’t recommend it enough. It’s great to have on hand because it works for just about everything! E-6000 is an adhesive that works on wood, metal, glass, fiberglass, ceramics, masonry and concrete. It also works really well with leather, rubber, vinyl and plastics. I like that it dries clear and once cured, it’s waterproof, washer/dryer safe, paintable and safe for photos! I used a paper towel because I couldn’t find my paint brushes, but a cheap paint brush is also helpful!

In addition to glue, you’ll want to buy round glass ornaments. You can buy completely clear ones, or iridescent or frosted variations. They come in different sizes & quantities, so just take into consideration the number of ornaments you’ll need and whether or not you want them to vary in size.

As I mentioned, the star of this show is the sequins. There are no rules here. Pick out whatever colors you want! I prefer smaller sequins, so make sure you look at the sequin size before buying online. I went with 6mm sequins in a variety of colors.

You can use standard ornament hooks, or a thin satin ribbon. If you’re thinking about using them as decoration (not just on your tree) or giving them as a cute gift, adding as an accent to your gift wrap, etc, I recommend using ribbon.

It’s not required, but I like to spray most of my crafts with Mod Podge sealer. It dries clear and helps keep all of the sequins from falling off. I also like that it makes the ornaments dust-and-fingerprint resistant.

How to Add Sequins to Your Ornaments

I used an old Amazon box as a workspace so I wouldn’t end up with sequins all over my house. But you can use a bowl or newspaper too.

There are two variations of these sparkly sequin ornaments. The first one requires literally no crafting… you just pour sequins into the ornament. You can pop the little top off of the ornament and use a piece of paper to funnel the sequins in. Add as much or as little as you want, using one, two or a ton of colors. Put the top back on and voila!

The other variation requires a little glue, but is basically fool proof. Using a brush (or in my case a paper towel), brush a thin layer of glue around the base of the ornament. Holding the ornament over your work station, sprinkle the sequins over the glue. The sequins should stick to the glue. You can mix colors before you sprinkle in a small dish or bag. Then, reuse the sequins that fall into your workspace. I like to press the sequins into place lightly, just to get an even coverage of sparkle!

Allow the ornaments to dry. It takes about 2 minutes for the glue to start getting “tacky”, which makes it easier to work with. And about 10 minutes for the glue to dry. A full cure takes between 24 and 72 hours. Remember, temperature and humidity will also affect dry time. To speed up the drying process, apply heat using a handheld dryer set on low.

If you want to add an extra layer of protection, take the ornaments outside and lightly spray them with Mod Podge sealer.

Add a ribbon and tie it in a bow (or an ornament hook)! If you want to put a few in a bowl or use them around the house as decoration, you can skip the ribbon/hook step!

That’s it! How easy was that!?
