The majority of the population has been to or heard of McDonalds and Burger King. But there are so many other, totally underrated fast food chains out there. Jack in the Box isn’t the only cult-loved fast food spot. There are tons of awesome chains across the country that should win spot in your heart, and even your stomach. So, I did the work for you and came up with a list of the best “underground” fast food restaurants. FYI, if I’ve missed one be sure to comment or tell me on Instagram.

Rubio’s Coastal Grill

It’s important for me to start with Rubio’s because it’s a very “controversial” choice. You either love it or hate it, but it got it’s start in San Diego. I’m a huge fan of Rubio’s, which got it’s start after the owner took a surfing trip to Baja and tried his first fish taco. Their famous fish too is battered and topped with cabbage and lime, and totally hits the spot. Now, they have over 200 locations, including San Diego. If you’re a sucker for a deal, they even have tacos for $1.25 every Tuesday. Take your taco Tuesday to the next level with a nice cold beer. That’s right, they serve beer (and wine) too!

Steak ‘n Shake

Omg y’all, I’m having major hunger flashbacks just thinking about Steak ‘n Shake. Sadly, We don’t have any here in San Diego. But you better bet I always track one down when I’m traveling or visiting Tony on tour. Surprisingly, they have over 500 locations across the US. I’m obsessed with their Thin ‘n Crispy fries. You can even get a 7×7 burger… that’s right, 7 patties and seven slices of cheese! They also make a mean cereal milkshake – I even made my own at home to copy them! My go to order is a Patty Melt ‘n Fries, sub cajun fries and add a chocolate chip cookie dough shake.

Shake Shack

Not to be confused with Steak ‘n Shake, Shake Shack just recently opened up in San Diego. FINALLY. I had it for the first time when I was in New York a few years ago and have been dreaming of their hotdogs and shakes ever since. I’m a big fan of their food, especially because they use 100% Angus beef, free of hormones and antibiotics. I’d go as far to say that they have some of the best milkshakes on earth. You can get a standard shake, or a Concrete – which is dense frozen custard blended with mix-ins. FYI, they’re international! Shake Shack has restaurants in a ton of international cities like Seoul, Tokyo, London, Cardiff, Istanbul, Moscow, Muscat, Beirut, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Kuwait City, Riyadh, Manama, Tehran and Jeddah.

Jimmy John’s

There are two types of people. Subway people and non-subway people. I hate Subway. There, I said it. It’s gross, the meat looks tired & the bread is bland. Enter: Jimmy John’s. They serve FRESH sandwiches that are made from scratch. And the ingredients are all clean & fresh. They even use locally purchased produce. They even slice their meats and cheeses fresh daily, at every single location. Their fresh French bread gets me every time. They serve their bread within 4 hours of it being baked so it always tastes like it just came out of the oven. My go to order is the #5 Vito. It comes with Genoa salami, capitol, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onions & vinaigrette (I leave the tomato off). And if you’ve never heard of their “Freaky Fast Delivery”, they guarantee delivery in under 20 minutes.

Round Table Pizza

Pizza talk can quickly get you into a heated debate. Everyone has their favorite pizza spot. But every once in a while, it’s nice to find a little consistency – whether you’re traveling, at home or a friend is ordering a pie. That’s why it’s nice to have a go to chain. I’ve had so many arguments defending the honor of Round Table over the years. Generally, it comes down to a “Northern vs Southern California” thing. Us Nor Cal kids grew up on Round Table and hold it near and dear to our hearts. They opened their first restaurant in Menlo Park, California and now have over 450 location. While most pizza chains use frozen dough, RT doesn’t skimp on ingredients. There’s a reason why people call it “The Last Honest Pizza.”  Their legendary King Arthur’s Supreme is one of my go to orders. If I’m feeling a little fancy, I’ll opt for the Chicken Garlic Gourmet. But at the end of the day, there’s no wrong choice when it comes to pizza.
