How to: TMNT Family Halloween Costumes for Couples
All of the details from our TMNT Family Halloween Costumes
It’s almost Halloween, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been planning our family costumes for a few months! We take Halloween VERY seriously at our house. We like to take sh*t to the next level and make our own costumes and create super unique and authentic pieces. I’m really excited for our costumes this year, but thought it would be fun to share our costumes from a few years ago.
Two years ago, I got the most insane flu on Halloween. Literally, next level. You know when you’re so sick you feel like you’re blacking out and coming to every few hours? Anyways, we had worked on our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costumes for a few months before Halloween. I tried so hard to rally and took one picture with Tony before passing out and sending him off to a Halloween party alone. I was so bummed. Luckily, Tony still won the Best Costume Award.
Fast forward two years later. I finally got the chance to wear my April O’neil costume and nerd out with Tony as Casey Jones and Doug as a tiny Michelangelo.
TMNT Family Halloween Costumes details
I’ve gotten a ton of questions about our costumes, so I thought I’d share some details on how you can make your own Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costumes. FYI, if you’re like us you can totally use them for Comic-con too.
April O’Neil Costume
I got the yellow jumpsuit I’m wearing on Amazon! There’s actually a really awesome April O’Neil costume that is a great “base”. I ordered a size small, but would recommend sizing up. It fits kind of like a swimsuit, so going up a size will give you a little extra room to move.
The next piece of the puzzle is finding white knee high boots. I wanted to find some that were comfortable – so I could wear them to Comic-con, duh. These are pretty similar to the ones I found on eBay. But if you want something a little “sexier”, I’d opt for these Steve Madden boots.
The belt that came with the costume was made out of fabric. So I opted to upgrade it and found this white leather belt and swapped it out.
One of the more difficult pieces of this costume was the wig. I actually ordered multiple wigs that were super weird looking. Finally found this wig from Arda Wigs that was the perfect fit. I got the Magnum Long in Dark Copper Red. They have a ton of super awesome cosplay wigs btw.
To finish the costume, I got an old microphone and a plain flag station logo. I printed a Channel 6 letter out from my computer with some sticker paper as a finishing touch.
Casey Jones Costume
Tony made his Casey Jones costume from scratch, but I put together a list of all of the things you need:
- Casey Jones Mask
- Denim Vest or Denim Jacket (then cut the sleeves off)
- White Henley Shirt
- Gray Sweat Pants
- Black Boots
- Brown Leather Golf Bag (I recommend finding one used on Craigslist or eBay)
- Old baseball bats, hockey stick, cricket bat & golf club (again, Craigslist is your best & cheapest bet)
To make the costume look more authentic, I recommend “wearing it in”. You can literally roll it round in the dirt to make it look more worn in.
TMNT Dog Costume
The best part of this family costume is Doug dressed as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. I found the cutest Michelangelo costume on Amazon for him. For reference, he weighs about 8 pounds and I bought him a size small.
