One of the most frequently asked questions I get is for restaurant recommendations in San Diego. A while back, I did  San Diego bucket list, complete with all of my favorite ideas for people vacationing in San Diego (or natives looking for fun ideas). But, I thought it would be fun to start featuring more of my favorite food finds, both in San Diego & when I travel.

There are SO MANY amazing restaurants in San Diego. One of my favorite hidden gems is located in El Cajon, about 30 minutes North East of downtown San Diego. Funky Fries & Burgers is more of a quick stop style restaurant than fast food joint. It’s definitely not your average burger spot though. There are tons of over the top, wild items on the menu that not only will completely wow you tastebuds, but make for an epic Instagram post.

Funky Fries & Burgers is where funky eating begins. Let me start by recommending you go with an empty stomach. Or, after an intense workout so you can mentally justify stuffing your face with an over the top burger, fries & shake. Also, you can totally go alone and hide in a corner so you don’t have to share. But I recommend bringing friends so you guys can sample a few items off of the menu. It doesn’t matter when you’re in town, they’re open 7 days a week. Monday through Saturday (10 AM to 10 PM ) and Sunday (10 AM to 9 PM).

Ok, so this was probably the hardest decision I’ve made since choosing what to name Doug. I opted for the Bacon Mac N Cheese Burger. Sounds subtle, right? NOPE! This burger came stuffed and overflowing with Melted Cheddar, Sliced Cheddar, 4 PIECES OF BACON, and a Fried Mac n Cheese Patty! I didn’t realize how incomplete my life was until I tasted Mac n Cheese in a burger. GAME. CHANGED.

Some of their other funky burger combinations:

Chili Cheese Burger
Homemade all beef chili, shredded cheddar and Onion Rings

BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger
Grilled Onions, Crispy Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Onion Rings, House Ranch, and BBQ Sauce

Hangover Burger
Fried Egg, Hash Brown, Bacon, Swiss & Cheddar Cheese, Ketchup, and Garlic Truffle Aioli

Pizza Burger
Pizza Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese, Pepperoni, Sausage, Parmesan Cheese, Italian Seasoning, and Mozzarella Sticks

Fries & Tots

In case the burgers weren’t making you drool already, enter: fries & tots. You can pick between regular french fries, tater tots or waffle fries for your “base”. THEN, you get to pick your toppings. I went with Pizza Fries, obviously. My waffle fries were topped with Pepperoni, Sausage, Pizza Sauce, Melted Mozzarella, Parmesan Cheese and Italian seasoning. They didn’t disappoint. I’m dreaming of remaking them at home right now…

Pulled Pork Mac N Cheese Fries

Buffalo Mac N Cheese Fries

When in Rome… or El Cajon, you order a shake. Their shake choices change, but are always over the top. My chocolate shake was what dream desserts are made of. Not only was it an enormous chocolate shake, it was topped with whipped cream, candy, an ice cream sandwich & a Hostess Cupcake. It really doesn’t get much better. If you’re not in the milkshake mood, you can also grab a piece of New York or Oreo Cheesecake.
