Everything You Need To Know About Sun Outdoors San Diego Glamping

You guys, it’s official. I love glamping! Remember when we went to Cava Robles RV Resort last year? Well, we were lucky enough to be some of the first guests to visit Campspot’s latest location, Sun Outdoors San Diego Glamping Resort.

San Diego Glamping - Sun San Diego Bay - Sun Outdoors - Campspot - Tiny House Rental

Sun Outdoors San Diego Glamping Resort

If you haven’t been glamping, it’s basically “elevated camping”. Campspot’s RV resorts are so fun because they have most of the amenities a hotel resort would have. But you still get a lot of the fun aspects of camping.

If you live in or near San Diego, the new Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay is the perfect place to start your glamping adventures. If you’re not from the area, I still highly recommend it as a vacation spot.

The best part? It’s the perfect spot to visit, whether you have an RV or trailer, or just want to relax in one of their fully furnished vacation rentals.

The Ultimate San Diego Glamping Guide

Sun San Diego Bay is an upscale (yes, they put the glam in glamping) resort. It’s technically “just outside” of San Diego in Chula Vista.

They have beautiful vacation rentals, beautiful RV sites and amazing on-site amenities.

Sun Outdoors San Diego Glamping Location

Sun Outdoors San Diego is located in Chula Vista, you’re actually right on the coast. Some of the sites even have a view of the ocean! It’s located right on the bay, a quick walk or bike ride to the beach.

It’s the perfect san diego glamping location near the beach. Even though it’s not technically in San Diego city, it’s still close to all of the best shops, museums, nightlife, restaurants, breweries & even surfing!

One of my favorite parts about the location is that it’s right by The Living Coast discovery museum. It’s a really cool museum where you can observe and interact with the coastal environment. I highly recommend checking out their private encounters. You can feed green sea turtles, meet a shark or even hangout with an opossum!

rv sites

I had no idea RV sites could get so fancy! Sun San Diego has full hook-up RV sites that all have private patios, stone paver fire pits with adirondack chairs, picnic tables, electricity, free wifi and cable, sewer hookup, a water hookup, landscaping and access to all of the resort amenities.

They also have the option to book pull-through RV sites, meaning no backing up required! They also have sites that come equipped with a full gas grill / bar station.

Vacation Rentals

Since we don’t own an RV, we opted to stay in one of their vacation rentals. Aka the tiny home I gave you guys a tour of on Instagram! When booking, you have the option of any of the following types of rentals:

  • 2 Bedroom Bayview Cottage
  • 1 Bedroom + Loft Bayview Cottage
  • 2 Bedroom Promenade Cottage
  • 1 Bedroom + Loft Promenade Cottage

They also offer pet friendly and accessible rentals.

We stayed in one of the one bedroom promenade cottages. I love that they’re located along a walkway that is lined with bistro lights. It really creates a fun sense of community (while giving you your own personal space an privacy).

The one bedroom we stayed in had a queen size bed in the main bedroom, a full sized sleeper sofa in the living area and two queen sized beds in the loft. Meaning you could technically fit 8 people in it, but they recommend accommodating up to six guests.

Regardless of which type of rental you book, they all include:

  • a full bathroom with walk in shower
  • a kitchen with a full sized refrigerator, 2 burner cooktop, microwave, dishwasher (full sized), coffee maker (keurig), cookware, dinnerware and linens.
  • parking for two vehicles
  • cable
  • Two TV’s (one in the bedroom & one in the living room)
  • wifi
  • ac/heat
  • patio table and chairs
  • natural gas grill
  • gas fire pit with adirondack chairs
  • 2 outdoor seating areas

I honestly couldn’t believe out rental came with a full sized refrigerator (and freezer) and a full sized dishwasher. That’s what I call glamping.

I use the term “tiny house” very loosely because it was like twice the size of my apartment in San Francisco. It was so spacious and the layout was really open and felt so comfortable. I absolutely love that the kitchen was open and the living area opened up into a patio area with really comfortable furtniture.

We spent most mornings and evenings with the doors open, listening to music, sitting on our little patio. At night, we would BBQ, hang out by the fire pit & turn on a movie.

San Diego Glamping Amenities

I honestly can’t tell you how surprised I was by how amazing the entire resort and amenities were.

The pool is absolutely beautiful. It’s huge! We stayed during the week and through the weekend and it never felt overwhelming. Even when it was more crowded, there were still plenty of pool chairs & space in the pool. I definitely recommend renting a cabana if you have the chance. They’re a great base if you have a larger group and come with a refrigerator stocked with waters and a TV.

When the Getaway Cafe & Bar opens, you’ll be able to order food and drinks for the pool too. For now, I recommend bringing your own mini cooler with some drinks & snacks in it.

I loved that they had different food trucks every day too. They set up right by the pool, so you could go grab lunch or a snack. But it would also make a great, easy dinner.

The pool area also has two jacuzzis, a splash pad for the kids, a poolside lounge ang grill and a poolside movie sceen.

Right next to the pool you’ll find the arcade, sky deck , game and card room and indoor/outdoor fitness center.

In case you hadn’t noticed, we also brought Doug! The whole resort is dog friendly. Even the vacation rentals (with a small pet fee). They have a few different dog parks too, so you can take your pup to run around off-leash.

A few other amenities include laundry facilities, event & meeting spaces, a market where you can buy food, drinks & other supplies you might have forgotten, a playground, basketball, pickleball and access to the sweetwater marsh bike and walking path.

FOOD TIPS

We brought our own food and drinks with us from home. But there are a few groceries stores close by before checking in (or during your stay).

If you want to go out to eat, either within walking distance or a quick drive, I recommend:

  • The Waterfront Grill
  • Shake & Muddle
  • El Patio
  • Farmer’s Table
  • Tavern at the Vogue
  • Filippi’s Pizza Grotto

A few things to know when you’re preparing your “meal plan” or what to bring with you to SUN SAN DIEGO BAY RV RESORT (this is for the vacation rentals, if you have an RV you’re probably a pro already):

  • You’ll have a refrigerator and a freezer, so you can bring just about anything with you.
  • There is an outdoor grill, 2 burner cooktop inside & a microwave. There is no oven.
  • It comes stocked with a few pans, utensils, etc. If you’re planning on grilling, bring your own tongs/spatula/brush. Depending on what you’re making, I recommend bringing a knife (the one in the unit wasn’t super sharp), a large bowl for serving or mixing (if you’re making a salad, serving up chips, etc), storage containers or ziplock bags for leftovers, anything more specific you might need.
  • The freezer doesn’t have an ice maker – so either stop for ice or buy some at the market. I’ve had my eye on this portable ice maker.
  • They give you a few coffee pods, but if you drink coffee every day like me, I recommend buying extras. It’s a standard Keurig machine, so you can bring whatever you like. Don’t forget creamer or sugar!
  • Bring plastic cups or insulated tumblers for bringing drinks to the pool.
  • There is a bar where you can order cocktails, mocktails, soda, beer & wine, as well as snacks by the pool – just like a hotel resort. But you’re welcome to bring your own food and drinks.

My San Diego Glamping Food Menu

Here is a list of all of the food stuff we brought & what we made during out stay (3 night).

Breakfast:

Lunch:

  • Sandwiches with rolls, deli meat, cheese (the same we used for burritos)
  • Sausage sandwiches using the same rolls, but grilling up sausage, peppers & onions
  • Make ahead antipasto salad with pita chips

Dinner:

  • Grilled frozen pizza – yes you can bbq a frozen pizza!
  • Taco Night – grilled carne asada, tortillas & fresh guacamole
  • Grilled make ahead kabobs (I pre skewered them),

Snacks:

  • Pita chips & hummus
  • leftover carne asada nachos (we used some tin foil & threw them on the grill)
  • snack mix
  • beef jerky
  • popcorn – yes you can make microwave popcorn on the bbq too!
  • s’mores
  • strawberries & whipped cream

Drinks

Other ideas:

  • Pasta salads are a great thing to make ahead. You can make a huge batch and put it into tupperware or a disposable ziplock bag.
  • I like prepping recipes like lasagna, enchiladas, pasta, etc. in disposable pans. You can throw it into the grill to warm it up when you’re ready and throw everything away when you’re done.
  • Crock pots are also a great addition if you have space in your car! You can even pre-pack it with whatever you’re going to make.
  • I recommend picking recipes that have corresponding ingredients. For example, we used the same tortillas to make breakfast and dinner. And used the same cheese on our sandwiches & eggs (which could also be used for something like burgers). Rather than bringing hot dog buns, we made sausage sandwiches to use up the same rolls.

DON’T FORGET TO BRING

  • A SWIMSUIT & SANDALS
  • I BROUGHT A ROBE AND SLIPPERS BECAUSE I LIKE BEING COZY – I ALSO WORE MY ROBE TO THE HOT TUB!
  • CARDS OR GAMES
  • A PORTABLE SPEAKER
  • POOL TOWELS (THE RENTAL COMES WITH TOWELS, BUT IT’S NICE TO HAVE EXTRAS)
  • AN EXTRA BLANKET FOR COZY TIME ON THE COUCH & BY THE FIRE PIT
  • ICE
  • FOOD & DRINKS
  • GRILLING TOOLS
