The Ultimate Spring Cleaning Checklist
Spring has finally sprung, which means it’s officially time to start fresh. Specifically, Spring is the time to clean up after our winter hibernating and hoarding.
The weather is getting warmer, flowers are blooming and and a pretty noticeable layer dust and grime is starting to show in most of our houses. In addition to finally being able to wear shorts again, it’s also time to clean! Some of us are regular Marie Kondo’s and have mastered the art of cleaning. But for others, it feels like a trip to the dentist.
No matter what your skill level, it can be helpful to attack our spring cleaning checklist methodically. That’s why I’ve broken up some Spring Cleaning tasks into easy, daily efforts. Rather than try to attack everything in one day, accomplishing a task every day will help keep you from getting overwhelmed. Which means you’ll get more done!
The daily tips below outline some basic cleaning categories that will help you clean almost every surface, object or area of your life!
22 Day Spring Cleaning Checklist
Day One: Clean Out Your Closet
This is one of the hardest cleaning categories for me. A few great things to consider when cleaning out your closet:
- Does it still fit?
- Have you worn it in the last month, 3 months, year?
- Would I wear it again?
- If I saw it in a store today, would I buy it?
- Do I love how it looks on me?
- Is it damaged?
To keep everything looking clean and neat, buy new matching hangers so that everything in your closet looks uniform. I also like using garment organizers to keep things categorized. Whether it’s by season, category, item type, occasion, etc.
Day Two: Clear & Organize Your Computer Desktop
When was the last time you tidied up your computer’s desktop? Delete old downloads, random screenshots & photos you don’t need. I like creating folders for different categories, rather than having random stuff floating on my desktop. Don’t forget to back your computer up along the way as well! If you’re not sure if you need to save something but it’s taking up space on your computer, save it to an external hard drive!
Day Three: Clean Out Your Purse
Dump that purse out! Throw away the floating pieces of gum & old receipts. Do you really need 18 chapsticks in there? I’m a huge fan of purse organizers. They help me keep my purse organized and I can pull them out and use them interchangeably with different bags!
Day Four: Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet
Pretty straight forward… throw away any old prescriptions, empty bottles, etc. I use a medicine cabinet organizer so that I don’t have random bandaids or pills lining my shelves.
Day Five: Unsubscribe from Junk Email
One of the greatest inventions ever: Unroll.Me. Not only is the service free, but you can instantly see a list of all your subscription emails. Then, unsubscribe from whatever you don’t want!
Day Six: Throw Away Mismatched Tupperware
Like socks, my Tupperware finds a way of getting lost. When I look through my containers drawer, I’m missing a handful of lids, no idea what happened! But what’ the use? If you can’t use it, toss it! If you need to re-stock on meal prepping containers, I love this BPA free set!
Day Seven: Clean Out Your Pantry
Get rid of any stale or expired foods. If you have items in your pantry that are still good, but you don’t think you’ll use them, put together a box and donate them!
Day Eight: Back Up the Photos on Your Phone
Some of us do this more frequently than others. If it’s been a hot minute, use this was a reminder to back your photos up!
Day Nine: Delete Unwanted Phone Photos
So you finally backed your phone up! Now it’s time to delete any old pics you don’t need any more. This will free up space on your phone and help you find photos more easily!
Day Ten: Throw Away Old Beauty Products
I like to clean out my beauty and makeup drawers a couple times a year. Somehow I end up with like 5 empty, dried out mascara tubes in my drawer. Toss any old makeup that you don’t use. Also keep an eye out for expiration dates on skincare products!
Day Eleven: Deep Clean Your Refrigerator
Not the most exciting task on the list, but very important. Especially if you don’t want your refrigerator to smell like old feet. Pull everything out of the refrigerator (and freezer). Toss anything that’s expired, empty or not-so-edible anymore.
Day Twelve: Delete Unused Phone Apps
I have some pretty random free apps that I’ve downloaded over the years. Everything from photo editors to crossword puzzles. If you don’t use it, delete it! Worst case scenario, if you want to download it again you can!
Day Thirteen: Give Away Unused Jewelry
So you cleaned out your closet. Now it’s time to go through all of your random rings, necklaces & bracelets. If you’ve got a ball of knotted necklaces you can’t untangle, toss it. Random jewelry you know you’ll never wear? Donate!
Day Fourteen: Donate Old Books
I’m not one to reread books. How often do you really need to reread Twilight? Are you going to ever reread that old textbook? I recommend donating old books. You can also use Amazon to sell back old textbooks, making it a win-win!
Day Fifteen: Clean the Shower(s)
Gross, I know. But it has to happen. Yes, you have to deep clean your shower. AT LEAST once a year. I do mine every month. But since it’s spring, it’s officially time to throw away those empty shampoo bottles and scrub the grout. PS I’m obsessed with this drill brush bathroom cleaner!
Day Sixteen: Organize the Pots & Pans
Sometimes I open my kitchen cabinets and look at a heaping pile of random pots and pans, don’t even ask me where the lids are. Take a few minutes to pull all of your pots and pans out. Organize them into an easy to reach configuration. Don’t forget to organize the lids while you’re at it!
Day Seventeen: Vacuum the Entire House
Yes, vacuum it all! I’m talking carpets, rugs, base boards, under the couch, on top of the couch, throw pillows, under the refrigerator & everything in between!
Day Eighteen: Clean All of the Glass
Whip out that Windex and get cleaning! It’s easier to get into the zone and wipe anything and everything glass down at once. That means windows, mirrors, picture frames, vases and everything glass you can get your hands on!
Day Nineteen: Wipe Down Cabinets
Ever notice that your cabinets get pretty grimy but rarely get any cleaning love? You can take a rag and warm water to them, or a wood cleaning spray like this one. Be sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies!
Day Twenty: Dust All of Your Home Decor
Dusting is one of the easier cleaning tasks in my book. I like to go room to room, starting at one side of the room and working my way around it. I love using Swiffer Dusters because they work on almost every surface.
Day Twenty One: Wash Your Windows
More of a hands on task, washing your windows needs to be done at least once a year to get rid of all of the dirt that builds up.
Mix one part hot water to one part distilled vinegar. Grab a sponge, moisten the window with the solution, then clean. You can also pick up some Windex Outdoor Glass Cleaner which attaches to your garden hose!
Day Twenty Two: Clean the Microwave & Oven
End your spring cleaning spree with a bang! By cleaning your microwave and oven! I like to use Easy Off oven cleaner because it’s fume free. You should be able to clean your microwave down with soap, water & a sponge!
