Two of the hottest hair trends for fall are polished, sleek styles and chain adorned ponytails. Direct from the runways at Fashion Week, these hairstyles are not only totally chic but easy to recreate at home. Chains were everywhere on the runways this season, and hair stylists found fun of ways to incorporate them into the fall 2019 hairstyles. My favorite examples that gave me major inspiration were sleek, edgy, glam ponytails. Strands of chains were attached to the hair and then pulled back into tight, low-hanging ponytails. Giving an industrial vibe to looks that are normally fairly simple or overly girly.

I am absolutely obsessed with this look, so I took it upon myself to figure out how to take the look from the runway to real life. Spoiler alert: it was actually super easy to recreate this look and I have complete confidence that you guys can do it too!

I enlisted the help of my friend and hair guru Sean to help me figure out the best plan of attack for making this look work and map out a step by step tutorial.

RUNWAY TO REAL LIFE: CHAIN PONYTAIL HAIR TUTORIAL

After analyzing the photos from Fall Fashion Week, I realized the biggest challenge was going to be achieving a slick, shiny ponytail with super strong staying power.

I’m a huge fan of the göt2b® line of products (remember the pink hair extension tutorial I did!), not only do they have a huge assortment of products, you can find them at a ton of local retailers. I get mine from Rite Aid, but you can also find them at Walmart, Target, CVS, and Walgreens.

So I decided to use göt2b® ultra glued® Invincible Styling Gel. You can also use the göt2b® glued® Styling Spiking Hair Glue as another option.

What I like about the Invincible Styling Gel is that it’s got amazing holding power. Which I think is where the “glued” name comes from! It’s also not sticky, which is a major bonus. When you use it with a brush or comb, it also creates a really nice, slick shine. A little goes a long way!

Step One

The first thing you need to do is start with straightened hair. It doesn’t matter whether your hair is clean or dirty. You just want to get your hair as straight as possible.

We used a flat iron to smooth my hair and make my normally wavy hair straight. I have hair extensions that add a bit of volume to my hair. If you have clip in hair extensions, you can use them to give your ponytail extra length or volume. But it’s not necessary. The style works with all hair lengths.

Step Two

We tried step two, two different ways. First, we tried clipping the chains in and then forming a ponytail. But it was actually easier to start with the perfect ponytail first, and then add the clips.

We parted my hair down the middle and formed a tight, low ponytail that was secured with a regular hair tie. I recommend using a seamless one that matches your hair color.

Step Three

Next, you’ll want to clip the chains in. They work the same way a small clip in hair extension would. Each set of hair chains comes with 4 strands. I opted to get 2 sets and used one of the strands around the base of the ponytail.

Each of the chain clips is 20″ long, which matched my ponytail length perfectly. I don’t recommend trimming the chains until they’re in your ponytail (in case they’re longer than your hair).

To attach the clips, slide the opened clip underneath your hair and fasten. Using my hair part as guidance, we placed two clips off to each side, on the back of my head. Then, added two clips on each side, closer to the sides of my head.

You should be able to just slide the clip in, fasten it and then use your fingers to carefully cover the clips with hair. Just be careful not to pull your hair too much or it will create bubbles.

Step Four

After the chains are attached, you can use another hair tie to fasten the chains in place. A clear hair tie also works depending on how thick your hair is.

Step Five

This step is optional, but I think it makes the hairstyle look more polished. Take another clip and slide it into your hair underneath the ponytail (just above your neck.

Then, wrap the chain around the base of the ponytail, covering the rubber band.

We used a few bobby-pins to secure the chains into my hair.

Step Six

Using a small (dime size) amount of göt2b® ultra glued® Invincible Styling Gel to start, gently use your fingers to smooth the front of your hair, starting at the roots (where your part is) and moving toward the base of the pony.

If you have bangs or pieces that fell out, you can use the gel and your fingertips to brush the pieces back & into place. If you need to, you can also use a small comb or teasing brush to brush them into place.

Then, use a small amount of gel on the ponytail, gently pulling downward on the hair. This will keep your hair straight and sleek.

Step Seven

Another optional step, you might need to/want to trim the chain length. The chain is really lightweight, so you should be able to use scissors to trim them.

Be careful not to cut your hair though! You might want to ask someone to trip them from behind to make sure the length works & you don’t accidentally snip then end of the ponytail.

Stylist Tip: When you take the style out and wash your hair, apply conditioner first. This will help break up the gel and make it “slide out” before shampooing.

Stylist Tip: Instead of a ponytail, you can also try a low braid or using the clips to accent straight hair when it’s down. Just remember to use a small amount of gel to keep your hair in place & reduce frizz.
