MICROBLADING 101: ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED about having your eyebrows microbladed

MICROBLADING 101: ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED ABOUT HAVING YOUR EYEBROWS MICROBLADED

Today’s post is both supporting one of my favorite local San Diego beauty businesses & answering some beauty questions for you guys. Let’s dive into Microblading 101!

I naturally have almost black hair. But for some reason, my eyebrows (and eyelashes) are insanely light. Like, almost blonde. So my morning routine always consists of filling in and shading my brows.

Before the pandemic hit, I was scheduled to get my eyebrows Microbladed by San Diego brow master extraordinaire Bree McKee of Bespoke Brows. While I wait for my appointment, I thought it would be fun to do a Q&A with her, answering all of your questions about Microblading eyebrows. Once I get mine done, I’ll definitely follow up with before & after results.

MICROBLADING 101

Whether you accidentally overt-weezed your brows or you’re like me and wish yours were fuller, Microblading is an easy solution for perfectly groomed, natural looking eyebrows. Instead of using an eyebrow pencil or powder, they’re perfectly permanent.

Most of us have heard the term “Microblading”, but what exactly is it? How long does it last? What do you need to know before getting them done? Is it basically just an eyebrow tattoo? Does it look like natural hair?

San Diego Microblading expert Bree is here to answer all of your Microblading 101 questions!

What exactly is microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent form of cosmetic tattooing, where pigment is manually implanted under the surface of the skin with a handheld tool. The delicate and precise technique can create hair-like strokes, fullness, density, and texture to design and shape the eyebrows, creating realistic effects and results!

What’s the difference between microblading and tattooing?

The difference between Microblading, or any type of semi-permanent makeup, is really the depth level in which it is implanted into the skin. Microblading is when pigment is delivered into the upper layer of the Dermis, below the Epidermis, right in between.

This is how we can create crisp, realistic effects like hair strokes, or soft pixelation, and makes it semi-permanent. Traditional style tattoos are implanted into skin much deeper in the Dermis and closer to the Hypodermis, making them forever permanent body art.

Can you tell the difference between natural Eyebrows and microbladed Eyebrows?

This is a tricky question! If the artist and technique is good enough, then it should be pretty difficult to determine if someone has had their brows done. It is always more convincing that nothing was ever done when there are brows hairs to incorporate with the strokes. This makes them look more more hyper-realistic and 3D.

When Microblading on brows with little to no hair, it just appears a bit more flat looking, because there is no hair risen off the skin to help create depth. But it can still create lovely results and help improve shape and color density!

When working with brows with little or no hair, I like to recommend additional shading with the strokes (callled Combo Brows) to help fill in and create fullness for my clients.

What’s the process for microblading?

The process does take some time and I always ask my clients to set aside 3-4 hours for their first visit. We need to be able to answer any and all questions clients might have to make sure they feel comfortable and confident before we start!

The skin is always cleansed beforehand and then we map out the desired shape and thickness with inked string. We are trying to create balance and symmetry to the brows and find something that is complimentary to the face shape.

Once I have the approval of my client, we can begin the Microblading process. I do a first pass of outline strokes, get the skin numb, and continue on to fill in the brows until completed- typically while my clients take a nap!

How Long Does it take Microbladed Eyebrows to Heal?

Heal time is typically 7-14 days. Most clients are healed within a week, but I always encourage and ask my clients to “baby” their brows for a full 14 days. Also to be patient and trust the process.

Your brows will go through a multitude of phases while healing, and it’s important to accept that this will happen and not to panic when it does. I always include a “Microblading Emotions” card in each aftercare bag to take home and help reassure you through the process.

How long does microblading last?

Depending on skin type and lifestyle, results should last anywhere from 1-2 years. I ask my clients to have them refreshed annually.

Is it worth if for someone who has full/uneven brows?

Absolutely! Some of my clients with beautiful full brows come and have them done. It can help create a more defined, full shape and alleviate morning hassle/ the time of filling them in! It is always a huge help creating more balanced and symmetrical brows- a little can go a long way, depending on the pair we’re working with!

Can any skin type /complexion get it?

Unfortunately, Microblading is not suitable for any or all skin types. This technique is best for younger, dry to normal skin, and without any blemishes or skin issues. It is not suitable and should be avoided if you have any of the following:

  • Oily skin or large pores
  • Acne
  • Thin, sensitive or mature skin
  • Rosacea
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • History of Keloids or scarring

Luckily, there are other forms of permanent makeup that are better suited fore these skin types, like Nano Brows or Powder Brows.

Side note:  ALL permanent makeup should be avoided if pregnant or breastfeeding.

On a scale from 1-10 what’s the pain?

Everyone’s favorite and most anticipated question! I would say that at times it can be uncomfortable, but never painful. Most clients are pleasantly surprised when I start because it’s nothing near what they were expecting!

Individual threshold for pain is different, but I say that most of my clients will tell me it’s about a level 2, and that is only for the first pass. Once I get my clients numb, they usually can’t even tell that I’m doing anything to them and sometimes fall asleep.

A lot of clients say that plucking their brows was the worst part, so if you can get past that, we’re good to go! I would recommend not going during your monthly cycle time, as hormones can make us more sensitive to pain. Always be sure to avoid sun, alcohol and blood thinner medications to help with sensitivity and bleeding.

How do you figure out what shape to do on your clients?

Each pair of brows is designed to your face specifications. I always take into consideration clients preferences for shape and thickness, but will custom map out each pair with inked string to what is most complimentary to your facial structure.

There are several points that must be considered when mapping out brows.

  • Making sure the brows are level
  • The inner point of the eye
  • The arch point of the brow
  • The tail end point past the end of the eye

I typically map out one side with these specific points and take a Calipers ruler to measure out on the other side, because there are NEVER any two brows or faces that are exactly symmetrical. This helps me create that balance and evenness that we’re trying to achieve, but remember that they are sisters not twins!

Why shouldn’t you go with the cheapest option (aka that dirt cheap Groupon deal)?

Well, we all know the saying, “You get what you pay for!”. And this treatment is no exception.

Typically the businesses advertising on Groupon or doing these kind of “dirt cheap” deals are beginners. You may luck out and get someone who is really good right off the bat, but usually they are starting out and finding their groove with their art and need to build a portfolio.

There is nothing wrong with these artists, everyone has to start somewhere, but do you want them practicing on your face? This is a form tattooing, on the most visible spot on your body. I would consider who you see when getting this treatment done.

Ask for photos, where they trained, how long they’ve been training, where they perform their services, do they have a license and insurance, and if they are regulated/passed by the health department. All of these things are very important!

When you choose an artist who is well trained, qualified, skilled and has taken years to practice and perfect their craft – you pay for it. You’re paying for countless hours of time, schooling and an artistic ability that is very hard to perfect. We take pride in our work and our jobs. Do your research before jumping into just any brow artist chair!

Tips for the best results & what NOT to do after?

Good aftercare & home-care!

Once I’m done completing any clients brow session, I remind them that the ball is now in their court! I’ve done the initial work, but good results are equal parts on them and how well they take care of them when they go home.

After-care is always explained in person before they leave the salon and the major things to avoid and NOT do, to get good retention are:

  • Do not touch, pick, or scratch the brows AT ALL in the healing process. This can result in pulling out/loss of pigment/scar tissue.
  • Keep them clean. Absolutely NO makeup on the brows for the entire duration of healing. Makeup is full of bacteria and can cause risk of infection.
  • Keep them out of the sun. Wear a hat as they heal, because no sunscreen is allowed on them at that time. This will protect them from the harmful UV rays. Once they are healed always apply sunscreen or wear a hat, this will make them last longer!
  • Avoid anti-aging skin care regime around the brow area. These products are amazing, and I live for them, but always avoid putting any around the or directly on the brows because they usually exfoliate and will cause fading faster.
  • Avoid overly long or steamy showers (saunas, Jacuzzi, facials) during healing process. This opens up the skin and releases pigment.
  • Don’t over exfoliate them. Be gentle with this area, they will last longer!
  • NO working out or heavy sweating for the duration of the healing process. I cannot stress this enough and can always tell when my clients will have a hard time following this rule. But it is imperative to good results, as sweating opens up with pores and pushes pigment from the inside out. Do some gentle yoga or some good stretches instead during this time!

What’s the down time?

There really isn’t much down time, some girls go to work right after we have finished our session. The healing time for the brows is 7-14 days.

I’m getting married, how far in advance should I start microblading?

Yay! Bridal brows are some of my favorites! I would suggest a year or so before the big day. This gives you time to have the initial session, 6-8 week touch up appointment, and then maybe a refresher/perfecting appointment right before! That’s how I did it with mine originally and it worked out perfectly. But as long as you get both your first and second appointment in before, you should be good to go!

Ok, Shameless Plug Time! Let’s get to know bree!I

I am a San Diego native and proud owner of the permanent makeup studio, Bespoke Brows.

I spent 15 years of my working career in the dental field until I came into the world of permanent cosmetics; and it’s pretty funny how easily the transition was from one to the other. They are very similar in procedure protocols and serialization.

I discovered my affinity for brows and permanent makeup after getting mine done for my wedding day. It was one of the best beauty enhancements I have ever done. Not just for my big day, but everyday, and I was instantly in love!

From childhood makeup, to high school dances, birthday parties, baby showers, and weddings; I have been honored to perform hair/makeup applications for many of these special occasions, and think it helped solidify my passion and calling into becoming a permanent makeup artist.

I trained and certified in the Microblading technique 3 years ago and have never looked back! I have spent my time between now and then extensively practicing, researching & fine tuning my craft and now hold 5 certifications in Microblading, Powder Brows, Combo Brows, Nano Brows and removal.

I pride myself on working with the best, whether that means continuing education from leaders within the industry, using state of the art equipment and top of the line materials. As an artist and perfectionist, I approach each client’s treatment with care and meticulous attention to detail.

No two faces are the same and I create custom-tailored brows designed to fit the individual needs and aesthetic preferences of each client. My goal is to enhance your natural beauty and refresh your sense of self-confidence!
