How To Prepare And Pack For A Long International Flight
Are you preparing for a long international flight and wondering what to pack? Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time flyer, it’s important to pack the right things in your carry on bag to make your flight as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
I travel a lot and have traveled international many times, so I have a routine and feel pretty confident in my packing abilities – knowing what to bring and what’s a waste of space. Since I’m getting ready for a long international flight soon, I thought I would share exactly what I bring and must-have items for a long flight.
Prepare and Pack for a Long International Flight
Prepping and packing for a long flight are crucial for several reasons:
- Comfort: A long flight can be tiring and uncomfortable, but packing the right items can make a significant difference in your overall experience.
- Entertainment: Long flights can be boring, especially if you don’t have anything to keep you occupied. Packing the right items can help you stay entertained throughout the flight.
- Hygiene: Being on a plane for an extended period can make you feel kind of gross – it can make you feel dirty and uncomfortable. Packing the right hygiene essentials can help you feel fresh and clean during the flight.
Travel Accessories
Travel accessories are essential for a comfortable and stress-free flight. Here are some of my must-have travel accessories for a long flight:
Neck Pillow
A neck pillow is at the top of my packing list for a long flight. It provides support for your neck and head, making it easier to sleep on the plane. Look for a neck pillow that is lightweight and easy to pack.
Entertainment
Obviously you’ll have your phone. But when it comes to a long flight, entertainment is key. Most planes will have a seat back TV you can watch movies and shows on. But sometimes there are connection issues and they stop working. Not to mention, internet doesn’t always connect on overseas flights.
I make sure to always have some music, podcasts and audiobooks dowloaded to my phone on Spotify. I also download a movie or two on my iPad. And just like the “old days”, I bring a physical book with me!
Eye Mask
An eye mask is another essential item for a long flight. It can help you block out light and get some much-needed rest during the flight. Look for an eye mask that is comfortable and has a soft lining.
Noise-Canceling Headphones
Noise-canceling headphones are a game changer for long flights. They can help you block out the noise of the plane and provide a more peaceful environment for sleeping or watching movies. Look for headphones that are comfortable to wear for an extended period. I recommend over-the-ear ones so you don’t risk losing them while you sleep.
Compression Socks
Hear me out, I know I sound like an old lady. But sitting for a long time on a flight can increase the risk of blood clots. Compression socks and even compression leggings can help improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots. They’ll also help you feel more comfortable and keep your feet from swelling.
Electronics Chargers
Don’t forget to bring chargers for your phone, tablet or any other electronic accessories you’re bringing. Most international flights will have an outlet below your seat to plug a charger into.
Travel Blanket
A travel blanket can help you stay warm and comfortable during the flight. Look for a lightweight and compact blanket that is easy to pack.
Other Long Flight Essentials
In addition to travel accessories, there are some essential items that you should pack for a long flight. Here are some must-haves:
Snacks
Airplane food may not always be to your liking, and it’s always a good idea to pack some snacks you like for a long flight. Look for snacks that are easy to pack and don’t require refrigeration. I normally bring protein bars, beef jerky, a snack mix, liquid IV & something sweet.
Water Bottle
Staying hydrated during a long flight is crucial. Pack a reusable water bottle and fill it up after you pass through security. I find this is especially helpful when you’re relaxing in your seat and don’t want to use your tray table or you wake up from a nap thirsty!
Medications
If you take any medications, make sure to pack them in your carry-on bag. It’s always a good idea to have them with you in case of any delays or lost luggage. I also pack anti nausea medicine & Tylenol in my bag, just in case!
Toiletries
Pack a small bag with essential toiletries like a toothbrush, toothpaste, makeup remover wipes, lip balm, hair ties, a hair brush and hand sanitizer. If I’m going to be on a long flight, I also like to bring deodorant or deodorant wipes. These items can help you feel fresh and clean during the flight.
a change of comfortable clothes
I personally don’t like to wear pajamas through the airport or in between flights. I normally like to change into sweats (don’t forget socks), after the meal service. Even if you don’t plan on getting changed during the flight, unexpected delays can happen, and drinks can accidentally spill!
OTHER RANDOM STUFF:
It’s All In the Bag
I generally only bring a personal bag, not a carry on style bag. For a few reasons:
- If I have connecting flights, I don’t want to worry about running through the airport with a roller bag or something heavy. It’s easier to hustle to a flight with a small bag. These are more useful for short trips, not long international travel.
- A lot of flights have limited overhead space. In the event the cabin runs out of room for bags, They’ll check it. I personally prefer checking bags ahead of time and packing them to be checked. That way I can always just keep my essentials in the space in front of my seat if needed.
- I personally always travel with a backpack. As someone who had a wallet fall out of their purse on a flight – I learned my lesson! Not only is it easy to organize everything I need to carry on to the flight, it’s comfortable to carry and fits under my seat and in the overhead bin!
- And for a checked bag, I love my Monos Luggage. I primarily use the Hybrid Trunk – especially when traveling internationally.
