How to Make DIY Glitter Pumpkins
By far one of my favorite Halloween projects… DIY Glitter Pumpkins!
It’s officially my favorite time of year. HALLOWEEN TIME! I love everything about it. The decorations, the costumes, the candy… it’s like Christmas comes early in our house! Last year I did some really fun Halloween DIY’s: Marble Pumpkins & Black Pumpkins. This year, I had to take my DIY Pumpkin-ing to the next level. So I thought to myself… what makes everything better???
GLITTER! Glitter makes everything better! I’m absolutely obsessed with these pumpkins because they don’t require carving and don’t require carving and last a lot longer than carved pumpkins! Even better? Opt for transitional colors and you can keep them around through fall and use them as Thanksgiving decorations!

- pumpkins
- spray paint primer
- glitter spray paint
- cardboard boxes or newspapers
- plastic gloves (optional)
I recommend buying a few different sizes and shapes when you’re picking out pumpkins. This will give the display more depth and then you can arrange them for variation.
I highly recommend using spray paint primer (white works best) so that there’s a solid base and it gives the glitter something to stick to. I tested a few pumpkins without the primer and the glitter slid off of the pumpkins. It also helps make the glitter pop more.
I used gold & red glitter spray paints. I think the colors look really good together. You can opt for any single color or color combinations though. I used about 1 can for 3 small pumpkins or 2 medium sized pumpkins. You’ll be spraying multiple layers, so I recommend buying at least one can per 2-3 pumpkins.
STEP ONE: Prepare Your Workspace
I recommend setting up a workspace outside. You’re going to be spraying paint, so it needs to be a well ventilated area.
I also recommend laying out some cardboard boxes or newspapers. That way you don’t get primer or glitter on anything.
Since you’re going to be doing multiple layers, you’ll want to make sure they’re in a safe spot to be left to dry for a few hours.
STEP TWO: Prime Your Pumpkins
As I mentioned, I highly recommend spraying a layer of primer on your pumpkins. The white spray paint primer works really well. Shake the can and hold the can about a foot away from the pumpkin. Then, spray an even layer around all edges. After spraying each pumpkin with primer, let it sit for about 30 minutes or until dry to the touch.
If you’re worried about getting paint on your hands, use a pair of dish gloves or plastic gloves. I got some on my fingers, but it washed off with soap and water.
STEP THREE: Spray Your Pumpkins with Glitter
Now comes the fun part! Shake the can well and spray a layer of glitter on the entire pumpkin. I did half of my pumpkins in gold and half in red.
Then, let them sit for 20-30 minutes or until dry. Once the layer of glitter is dry. Spray another layer on. I sprayed about 3-4 layers on each pumpkin. If there are any spots that need extra glitter, add another layer!
Let them dry thoroughly (at least an hour or overnight) before moving them! Then, put them on display!
If you want to leave the pumpkins outside, I recommend spraying a final gloss sealer. This will protect your DIY glitter pumpkins from the weather & rain! However I do recommend pulling them inside if it starts raining!
