I’m obsessed with the color pink! I’ve always dreamed of having pink hair, but have never had the guts to do it!

It might seem like a crazy hair color, but it’s actually incredibly flattering for blondes and brunettes of all skin tones.

If you’re like me and want to try having pink hair, but are nervous about making a big change, or maybe you can’t commit to pink hair because of your job or school, then this DIY tutorial is perfect for you!

You can make your very own pink highlights that clip into your hair, right at home! You don’t have to spend a ton of money or take a trip to the salon with using Schwarzkopf® got2b® Gilded Rose Metallic hair color! FYI, Gilded Rose is the Color of the Year by Pantone, meaning it’s totally on trend!

The best part is that you can clip them into your hair for a fun night out or day in the sun without damaging your hair!

So get ready to say goodbye to boring colors with got2b® Metallics and yes to head-turning radiance and colors that actually last!

How to Dye Your Own Pink Hair Extensions

I love this tutorial because it’s so easy to follow. You can use an old set of hair extensions, giving them a new life. Or order a new set and express yourself in colors!

I opted for blonde extensions to make the gilded rose color more vibrant. The darker the hair you dye, the more muted the color will be. I would recommend using blonde extensions, even if you have brown or black hair. This will ensure the color will pop and last longer!

To color my extensions, I’m using the new Schwarzkopf® got2b® Gilded Rose. It’s a permanent hair dye, so it will last even after styling and washing. The color also has a metallic-shine booster for cool, shimmering tones.

You can find it at your local Walmart, or on Walmart.com and it only costs $9.97 per box!

It’s so easy to use too! Inside the box, you’ll find developer lotion, a color ream tube, color after treatment, instructions and a set of disposable gloves.

Since you’re dying extensions, you won’t have to worry about your hair growing out either! If you notice the color fading, just buy another box and dye again!

Step By Step Instructions

I recommend wearing an old t-shirt when working with hair dye! I also like to use my kitchen sink when rinsing the hair so that it doesn’t stain anything.

Another tip: make sure to put your hair back, you don’t want to accidentally wipe any dye onto your hair on accident!

What You’ll Need:

  • Clip in human hair extensions – I’m using a set of light blonde clip in hair extensions.
  • Schwarzkopf® got2b® Gilded Rose hair dye
  • A baking sheet lined with tinfoil

  • Unscrew the application cap of the Developer Lotion. Pierce the Color Cream tube with the reverse of the cap and carefully squeeze the entire contents into the Developer Lotion bottle.
  • Replace the application cap and shake well until all of the components are thoroughly mixed and a smooth, creamy consistency. Twist off the application tip.

  • Apply the dye to your extensions and work the color evenly down the length of each extension piece.
  • Lay the extensions down and let the color process. I like wrapping the extensions into little mounds to let the color soak in. Leave the color to develop for 30 minutes.

  • After processing, rinse the extensions to remove all of the color.
  • If they’re tangled, use a leave-in conditioner before brushing them out.
  • Let your extensions air dry or blow dry and style them. I like using a round brush and blow dryer, then styling with a curling iron to form loose waves.

Clipping in Your Hair Extensions

There are two routes for clipping your extensions in. I like clipping my extensions into a separate, halo-style set of hair extensions that match my hair color. Because my hair is shorter, this helps them blend well.

If you have two sets of clip in extensions, you can also use them to add more volume and help blend the extensions with your natural hair.

If not, just follow these simple steps to clip in your new colored extensions:

  • Each extension has a clip that you bend to open and press to close.
  • To help the extensions hold better in your hair, you can backcomb gently at the roots or use hairspray or texture spray on your roots. I like using got2b® Freeze Blasting Spray on my roots to help the extensions stay in place.
  • I separate my hair into 3 sections, using a clip to keep my hair separate while inserting the clips. Depending on how many hair extensions you have, evenly disperse them throughout your head, making sure your real hair covers the clips.
  • If you’re styling your hair up or in a braid, you can use them in different locations so that they lay flat and work with the style.

A Few Other Tips Before You Begin

  • Invite a friend over to help! Dye extensions together and make a party out of it! It also makes it a lot easier having a second set of hands to help! You can check this link for more inspiration!
  • Keep in mind the amount of hair you’re dying. You don’t want to run out of hair dye. I recommend 1-2 boxes for a small to medium amount of extensions. If you’ve got extremely long, thick extensions with a lot of volume, consider buying 3-4 boxes.
  • Rinse your extensions thoroughly before wearing them so that you don’t accidentally get dye on your clothes or bedding! I like to wear black/sleep with an old pillowcase the day after I get my hair dyed just in case!
