Girl, Don’t Wash Your Hair. The Trick to washing your hair less.
This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Waterl<ss. All opinions are 100% mine.
When I say don’t wash your hair, I don’t mean that you should stop taking showers. I repeat, do not stop showering.
I absolutely HATE washing my hair. It takes forever. My hair isn’t thick (or thin), I just have a lot of it and a lot of volume. Add in extensions and it’s a chore. Having to wash, brush out & dry my hair (I like to air dry, not blow dry) takes hours.
If I shower at nighttime, I’m stuck sleeping with wet hair that makes my pillow damp and freezing. If I am in a hurry, I have to blow dry it. I don’t like the way my hair looks after it’s blow dried, it’s massive and feels super dry. Not to mention it damages hair constantly putting heat on it.
I also feel like my hair looks best after a couple days when the natural oils start chilling out my voluminous mane. I work out daily, which doesn’t help the matter. I’m not one of those cute girls who can work out with their hair down or in a chic low ponytail. I’m a hot sweaty mess.
So instead of washing my hair every day, I have a fun little trick for washing it only one to two times a week…
I use dry shampoo and dry conditioner! Most people have heard about dry shampoo but are using it wrong. And I honestly had never even heard of dry conditioner until Waterl<ss sent me their Dry Shampoo – No Residue and Weightless Smooth Dry Conditioner to try. But let me tell you, the combination of this power couple of hair products is a major game changer.
LET’S CHAT ABOUT WATERL<SS FOR A SEC
A little backstory… Waterl<ss was created to help us wash our hair less! And when I say us, I mean everyone. Their goals was to create a line that could be used by different types of people with different types of hair.
A really cool aspect of their “product testing” phase is that it lined up with an actual situation that was happening in South Africa. Cape Town told residents that they were 3 months away from running out of water, which would affect over 4 million people.
The Water<ss line would be able to not only help people who didn’t “want” to wash their hair, but also those who didn’t have the option to wash their hair. I love that the brand has a dual purpose. And that their goal is to empower all women, regardless of where they live, their hair type, ethnicity, age, lifestyle, etc.
WHAT IS DRY SHAMPOO
Dry shampoo is basically a powder or fast-drying spray that provides a water-free option for cleaning your hair. It works by absorbing excess sebum and other oils from the roots of your
hair, revitalizing it and leaving it smelling fresher. It leaves your hair looking and feeling clean and refreshed without having to shower or use water.
WHAT IS DRY CONDITIONER?
As you might have guessed, dry conditioner is also conditioner that doesn’t require water or showering! It penetrates the hair fiber, controlling water loss and making hair softer and more pliable. It makes your hair smoother, softer & shinier. Just like a standard conditioner.
The Trick To Washing Your Hair Less
Ok, so now you know what dry shampoo and dry conditioner are. And you know a little more about the background of why Waterl<ss created their products. So how exactly do you wash your hair less? Let me share a few tricks I learned and my new hair routine.
Ok, so now you know what dry shampoo and dry conditioner are – and you know a little more about the background of why Waterl<ss created their products. So how exactly do you wash your hair less? Let me share a few tricks I learned and my new hair routine.
1. I wash my hair twice a week. Normally I try to go about 3-4 days between washing. But sometimes I can make it a whole week if I’m not sweating profusely. I’ve noticed I wash my hair less in the winter than in the summer.
2. I like to let my hair air dry, unless I REALLY need to dry it fast. This helps keep my hair from drying out too much too. I also like the natural wave my hair takes on when it dries naturally.
3. After my hair is dry, I like to style it with a 1.25″ curling iron. The way I curl it varies, but I normally curl 2″ sections at a time.
4. Instead of using hairspray, I use dry shampoo to lock in my curls and make my style last longer. I’ve been using Waterl<ss’s Dry Shampoo – No Residue. They also make a light-weight foam version, depending on your preference. I like that when I use dry shampoo, it doesn’t leave a residue – which happens when you use products like hair spray, gel or mousse. Clean hair doesn’t always hold style as well either, so if you lightly spray your hair with dry shampoo, it gives a little extra grip to help it hold shape.
5. I use the same dry shampoo at night, before bed. I’m not crazy, I swear. I wake up with less oil and grease in my hair. I do the same thing before I work out. I spray my roots and when I finish, the sweat is way more manageable.
6. Dry shampoo is kind of like one of those oil absorbing sheets you can use on your forehead to mattify your skin. But instead it works on your scalp, soaking up oil. Dry conditioner swoops in and freshen up your hair from the “mid-section” to the ends – making the rest of your hair look and feel fluffy, smooth & hydrated.
7. I like using a little burst on my ends daily because they can look and feel a little dry. I’ve been using dry conditioner instead of serum or hair oil. I like that it’s more lightweight and doesn’t accidentally make my hair look greasy.
8. If my hair has way too much volume, I’ll lightly spray closer to the roots and brush it. But I always avoid getting too close or directly spraying my roots. I also like to spray a little on my brush and smooth away flyaways with it.
Some Extra Pro Tips for Using Dry Shampoo & Dry Conditioner
- When using dry shampoo on your roots, use your fingertips to massage the products into your roots and scalp. To add a little extra va va voom, flip your head over and massage the product in while your is upside down.
- Have a cowlick, kink or weird flat spot from sleeping? Apply some dry shampoo and use your blow dryer on the cool setting. Blast the cool air at your roots and it will help change the direction of your hair and/or build volume.
- Getting a fancy blowout? Make it last even longer by using dry shampoo to maintain the style and absorb oil.
- Accidentally go overboard with product? I have had my fair share of experiences with too much shine spray or oil. Instead of jumping in the shower, you can use dry shampoo to counteract the disaster.
- You can use dry shampoo to keep bobby pins in place! Game changer, right? You can use it to add a little extra grip to slippery bobby pins or hair clips. Just spray them with a little dry shampoo before using them.
- Wondering how girls get those Pinterest- worthy braids? You can use dry shampoo to add texture to your hair to help you form and hold fancy braids, messy buns or updos.
- I like to flip my head upside down when I’m using dry conditioner sometimes. Or spray it in layers so that it’s applied throughout my hair, not just on the top layer.
- You can use your blow dryer on a low heat setting to add a little texture and help distribute the dry conditioner.
- If my hair is looking like it’s on the verge of needing a wash and I want to get one more day out of the style, I do a quick spray before pulling my hair back into a ponytail. It helps make the ponytail look sleek & shiny and gives my hair a refreshed scent.
- I really like using dry conditioner in the winter when my hair is feeling a little extra dry and frizzy.
- Instead of stripping your hair of its natural oils and stripping your scalp, you can increase the time between washes and train your hair to be washed less!
The Verdict
We had a little staycation at a hotel in La Jolla and the Waterl<ss Dry Shampoo – No Residue and Weightless Smooth Dry Conditioner saved my life. If you thought I hated washing my hair on the average week, it’s amplified by 20 when we’re traveling. I absolutely CAN NOT STAND washing my hair in hotel showers. For some reason, the water always affects my hair differently. I don’t like traveling with shampoo and conditioner, and the little travel size ones they give you always make my hair crazy. Don’t even get me started on trying to use a hotel blow dryer. It’s a combo guaranteed to make my hair look huge, dry and impossible to style.
So, I brought the Waterl<ss dry shampoo and conditioner with me to give it a little “torture test”.
I avoided getting my hair completely wet in the pool & jacuzzi because chlorine is never good for hair. And I wanted to try to go as long as possible without having to rinse it. But a few spots got a little wet, so I used the dry shampoo on those spots after my hair dried.
If you’ve ever gotten a massage, you know you’ll leave the spa with some crazy hair and most likely some oily residue from the massage oils. You can use dry shampoo to both absorb the oil and fix the kinks from your ponytail.
Before dinner, I re-curled a couple of pieces of my hair – those front pieces that have a mind of their own and the spots underneath that had gotten wet. But I didn’t have to redo the entire thing. I sprayed a little dry shampoo on my roots and some dry conditioner to make it shiny and get rid of the chlorine smell. I also loved not having to pack a ton of styling products.
Overall, I give them a 10/10. Both for vacation and everyday life. Not only am I now using them both in my daily routine. They’ve totally changed the way I travel! I plan on getting travel sizes and throwing them in my purse so I can spritz my hair after flights, on long bus rides & “just in case” moments when the weather changes!
