I’m a huge collector of band merch. I’ve been adding t-shirts & sweatshirts to my collection for almost 20 years. I have tons of vintage shirts, but also like to buy new ones from stores like Hot TopicΒ and even onΒ Amazon. One of my favorite blog posts of all time is my DIY Choker Cutout T-ShirtΒ because it’s a fun way of updating some of my old band tees! Which got me thinking… it’s about time Doug got a wardrobe upgrade. Doug has tons of outfits and costumes, but no band t-shirts! I thought it was only fitting – since both of his humans love music – that Doug get his very own DIY Dog Shirt!

DIY Dog Shirt

The greatest part about this DIY is that you can make a custom t-shirt for your dog (or cat) using just a baby onesie! There are tons of band baby onesies on Amazon. You can basically get a onesie for any band, from MisfitsΒ to Wu-TangΒ and everything in between. I wanted to stick with the classics and went with Slayer for Doug’s shirt… a standard “War Ensemble” (google if you don’t get my joke). Doug weighs about 8 lbs (tiny, I know), so I got him size 0-6 months. You might want to measure your dog and test out a few sizes to figure out the best fit. You can also find a ton of fun, inexpensive onesies at Target.

How to Make a Dog Shirt

To get started, fold the onesie in half (lengthwise). Cut straight across, just above where the leg seams are. You can try it on your dog to see if it needs to be shortened. There’s no need to hem the bottom, unless you want to whip out your sewing machine and give it a finished edge. I like having a raw hem because it gives it more of a “band tee” look.

How cute does Doug look!? He also recently got a pretty fancy new bed. I love that it looks like a super glam mini couch. He’s definitely sleeping in style with his faux fur rug too! You can shop some of my other favorite dog beds here.
