Edgy HOLIDAY Decor: DIY Black SNAKE Wreath
I’ve been on a total DIY bender lately. Do you ever feel like you go through periods of creativity? Some months I draw a total black and have no desire to get crafty. Others, I’m basically spray painting and bedazzling our entire house. Not even Doug is safe (remember his DIY Dog Shirt)!
As I was searching for edgy Christmas decorations, I realized there’s not a lot of options for us punk rock princesses (and princes). I found some fun black ornaments from Target & their new Magnolia Home Decor is ammmmazing. If you’re looking for black & dark green plaid decor, run to Target now.
For Halloween, I did some really fun Black Pumpkins for our front porch. So, I decided to put on my craft hat (aka my black beanie) and get to work. This easy holiday DIY is the perfect way to spice up your decor!
How to Make a DIY Black SNAKE Wreath
I love Christmas Wreaths on doors. They’re a really easy way to get into the holiday spirit and are relatively cheap to buy/make. I prefer going with “faux” wreaths because they last longer and don’t make a giant mess shedding.
What You Need
- Rattan or Twig Wreath: I got mine at Target, but you can find them on Amazon or your local craft store for about $3.
- Black Spray Paint: I recommend getting multi-purpose spray paint so that you can leave it outside and it won’t get ruined! Again, you can buy on Amazon or your local craft store.
- Styrofoam Skulls: I found mine at Target around Halloween, but you can find them online by searching “bag of skulls” or “styrofoam skulls”. HERE are some on Amazon!
- Plastic Snakes: These are super easy to find, just look in the toy section of any store! You can also find them online. It doesn’t matter what color they are! I used two different plastic snakes that were different shapes.
- Fake Flowers, Leaves or Ornaments: I used some fake leaves, but you can get creative and add whatever you want! Get creative. Remember, it doesn’t really matter what color the things you choose are since you’ll be painting them black.
- Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue: I recommend using hot glue because it works really well with various materials. Don’t worry if you make a mess, you’ll be spray painting over it all in the end!
Prepare Your Work Space
I recommend laying out newspaper or garbage bags so that you don’t get glue or paint on anything. If you have an outdoor area for painting and drying, that works best. If not, just make sure you’re working in a well ventilated area.
If you’re spray painting inside, you might want to throw a mask on.
I like to wing it, but you could also wear rubber gloves so you don’t get black paint all over your hands!
Glue Your Ornaments On
And by ornaments, I mean snakes and skulls! Heat up your hot glue gun & put a small amount of hot glue on the backs of your snakes and skulls. To attach the snake to the wreath, place them and let them dry.
Be careful with the hot glue gun. I feel like it’s pretty obvious, but just as a warning: the glue gets VERY HOT!
Also, make sure you press down for at least 5-10 seconds while it cools off and dries. If not, you won’t get as strong of a hold.
Spray Paint Your Wreath
Lay your wreath on the ground and spray paint! Literally, that’s it. I recommend doing a few coats, letting each one dry for about 20-30 minutes. Then, flip it over and get the back. Make sure to get in the nooks and crannies!
I like to make long strokes, as opposed to continuously spraying. That way you don’t get any paint puddles. It’s also helpful to hold the can about a foot away from the wreath while spraying to get even coverage.
You could also spray paint each of your skulls, snakes, etc. before placing them on the wreath. But it’s not entirely necessary.
Decorate YouR House
Let it dry for a few hours & hang it up! How easy was that!? It’s the perfect from door wreath for any time of year! We’ve got ours up for Christmas, but you could totally use it as a Halloween decoration or front door decor year round.
Depending on your door type, you may need a door hanger. I just used some twist ties to mount them on the door.
You can also use your wreath to decorate above your mantle, above a bar or anywhere else in your house. You could also make a few of them (maybe even different sizes) and use them throughout your house!
