It’s officially 3 months until our wedding! If you’ve been following me in Instagram, you know the saga of our rescheduled wedding followed by the insanity of our wedding venue shutting down last month. That’s a whole blog post I’ll try to tackle in the next few weeks.

But for now, I spent some time taking out my wedding planning frustration with DIY projects! I made my own custom bride jacket & am going to show you how you can make your own DIY studded leather jacket too!

HOW TO MAKE A DIY STUDDED LEATHER JACKET

Custom jean jackets are really popular in the bridal world. Hey, I even have one! But they’re not really my style. I’m more of a leather jacket gal.

So when it came time to make myself a custom wedding jacket – I opted for white leather & studs!

I got this white faux leather moto jacket from Revolve a few months ago and I instantly knew I wanted to use it for something wedding related. FYI, it’s also under $100! It’s from one of my favorite affordable brands, Superdown. I ordered a size medium because I wanted it to be slightly oversized.

You can use any leather jacket, in any color. I found a really cute one on sale that’s pastel tie dye that would be really fun.

ADDING STUDS TO YOUR MOTO JACKET

I feel like the more traditional bridal style is a pearl denim jacket. Which is totally cute & fun, but I wanted to make mine a little edgier. I mean, my style always has a little rock & roll vibe.

To make my custom leather jacket, I added a bunch of black bullet spikes. I found these specific spikes on Amazon.

I ended up ordering 3 bags, or 300 total and used all of them. To be safe, I would recommend buying at least 3 bags if not 4. That way, if any of screws are stripped you have a few extra.

Here is a Full List of Supplies You’ll need:

Step One

First, you’ll need to decide how far apart you want to space your studs. I recommend laying a few out and measuring to get an idea of the way you like it. That way, you can figure out the specific measurement and spacing.

Then, use your ruler and a pencil to make small marks where you want your studs.

I made all of the marks first, line by line. That way I had a grid to visualize where I would be making holes.

Step Two

Once you’ve “mapped out” your jacket, use the scratch awl to poke holes in the jacket.

I started with the collar & then did lapels. I found it easier to make one hole & then assemble a stud. That way the hole was easier to work with. If you wait, they can close up a bit and make it harder to put the screw back through.

Use your screwdriver to push the back of the screw the hole. Then, twist the front of the screw on. You can use the screwdriver to tighten the spike once it’s in place.

STEP THREE

Repeat the process. A lot….!

I did the jacket in stages, starting with the collar and doing each lapel different nights while I was watching TV. It’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it – it’s just a little time consuming. But the end result is so fun!

You can replicate a jacket like mine, or use whatever colored spikes or jacket you want! They even make the same screws in white & hot pink.

PS, my dress is also from Revolve, linked here!

This is also a really fun idea for a bridesmaid who wants to make a special jacket for the bride! Or, if you’re getting married, you could make similar matching jackets in a different color for the bridal party! It would also make such a fun gift for a bridal shower or bachelorette too.
