Kitchen Hack: Ice Cube Tray Pizza Rolls
One of my all time favorite snacks, or low key Netflix binge night dinner, are Totino’s Pizza Rolls. They’re so addicting. Ever since I was a little kid, they’ve been my go to “treat yo self” food. I can go through bags of those little things like no one’s business. If you’ve never tried them, they’re basically little pizza bites. Pizza toppings stuffed into a little dough square, baked to perfection.
And you have to bake them by the way. None of that microwave nonsense, I’m not a monster. I actually prefer mine over cooked. When they start getting a little extra golden brown, on the verge of burning. Right when the filling starts exploding through the seams. Ok, I realize this is starting to sound like that episode of South Park when Randy calls the Food Network hotline for late night food descriptions.
So, it seemed like an obvious move to try to recreate these little flavor blasts and post a recipe. I will say, it’s impossible to get that “real” Totino’s flavor. Mainly because I don’t have access to MSG or the other manmade ingredients they use. But, I did come up with a pretty tasty recipe that’s also fun to make. Mainly because you use an ice cube tray as hack to make them all the perfect shape!
How To Make Homemade Pizza Rolls With An Ice Cube Tray
What You’ll Need:
- classic ice cube tray
- 1 crescent dough sheet
- 3/4 cup of marinara sauce
- 1/4 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
- 3 tablespoons of mini pepperoni
- nonstick cooking spray
- baking sheet
Directions:
- I recommend making the pizza rolls ahead of time and freezing them. If you want to make a larger batch, you can double or triple the recipe. You’ll get 12 pizza rolls with the above recipe.
- Unwrap/pop open your crescent dough and spread it out. Then, cut the sheet in half. Lightly spray your ice cube tray with cooking spray. Then, lay half of the dough on top of the tray.
- Gently press the dough down into every hole and hold it for a few seconds to stretch the dough. If you get a hole, you can use some of the leftover dough on the edges to fill the holes.
- Combine your sauce, cheese & pepperoni in a small bowl. Then, using a teaspoon, put a scoop of filling into each cube.
- Place the second sheet of dough on top. Then, press down on the edges to seal it. Trim the extra dough off of the edges and save for later in case you have any holes. I used a toothpick to poke a small hole in each pizza bite to remove extra air.
- Freeze your ice cube tray for at least 45 minutes.
- Let the tray thaw for about 10 minutes and flip the tray onto a cutting board.
- Cut & separate the pizza bites. If there are any holes, use your extra dough to patch them up.
- Spray your baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and bake at 450 for about 10 minutes or until they’re golden brown.
If you want to make a larger batch, you can cut the pizza bites and place them in a large ziplock bag or airtight container. When you’re hungry take out as many as you want and bake!
