Frankenfood: Pokirrito’s Sushi Burrito
Everywhere I look, I see genius culinary creations being created. There are so many over the top menu item, like Doritos Locos tacos, KFC Double Downs, Cronuts, Root Beer Float Oreos, Fried Butter and even Mac N’ Cheetos. So what happens when you combine two of the most loved foods on the planet – you get a Sushi Burrito. That’s right, now you can have your sushi in easy, hand held burrito form. This isn’t just marketing hype guys, it’s the real deal.
What Is A Sushi Burrito?
Alright, let’s break it down. Don’t worry, you won’t find refried beans in your sushi burrito. The rice is exactly the same as the rice in sushi, but instead of carne aside, you get poke! And instead of salsa, you get soy sauce or sriracha mayo!
Not sure what poke is? It’s basically a fish salad. Ok that sounds gross, but I swear it’ amazing. Also, it’s pronounced “POH-key”, not poke like the creepy Facebook action. It’s also becoming increasingly popular in the U.S., but has been a Hawaiian staple for centuries. It’s normally served in a bowl and is generally pretty healthy, but still super tasty.
Generally, you get to choose a raw fish: tuna, octopus, albacore, salmon, shrimp, scallops or other local fish. You get to choose a base as well, normally rice, salad greens, or even fancy options like cauliflower rice or quinoa. Finally, you get to choose between a ton of toppings and sauces. Every restaurant is different, but generally you can choose from things like seaweed salad, onions, avocado, garlic, crab, peppers, shiso, etc. When you order a sushi burrito – it all comes wrapped up in a seaweed, nori or soy!
Where To Get a Sushi Burrito
If you don’t live in San Diego, hop on Yelp and search for “sushi burrito” or “poke”. If you live in San Diego, you have to go to Pokirrito! I’m literally obsessed with it. I dream of it. I plan out my day so that I can fit it into my schedule. That’s how awesome it is. I even order it using Postmates on a regular basis!
Pokirrito is a “fast casual” restaurant owned by Chef Junya Watanabe, who also own RakiRaki Ramen! If you like ramen, definitely check them out too (if you go to the Pokirrito location in Little Italy, they share the same building)! They have a huge menu! Which gives you tons of options for your sushi burrito or poke bowl. They serve non-GMO white rice, brown rice and even kale salad as a base for their fresh seafood.
They have eight signature sushi burritos with ingredients like handline-caught tuna, fresh Alaskan salmon, spicy tuna, krab meat and flame-fired teriyaki glazed chicken and beef. You can even make your sushi burrito flaming hot… you guessed it, they’ll literally roll the burrito in FLAMING HOT CHEETOS! They also serve a ton of drinks and appetizers to round out your meal.
