Picnics are one of my favorite ways to spend a sunny afternoon. Actually, strike that. You can have a picnic rain or shine, as long as you plan accordingly. Whether you choose to dine outdoors or set up an indoor feast, food always seems to taste better when you enjoy it with people out of a basket. I’ve put together a list of my top tips to help you with everything from picking the best location to packing your basket like a pro. All you’ll have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy your perfect picnic!

How to Plan a Picnic

Picnics always sound like a good idea in theory. I always envision something out of a perfume ad, perfect plating, a wide brimmed hat & laughs over wine and cheese. But by the time you find the perfect spot, most of the time the food in your tupperware has exploded and you’re left chugging a warm bottle of chardonnay because you forgot the cups. But have no fear, I’ve got everything covered. So the next time you want to plan a picnic you’ll be ready to rock.

Pick a Spot

The first thing you need to do is pick a place. Take into consideration the time of year, weather and day of the week. Whether you’re headed for a secluded spot in a field or headed to the beach, the location you choose can make or break your day. The beach is the perfect location for people who like to be active or lay out in the sun. The forest is a great spot to settle in if you don’t want to overheat. There are plenty of places to explore, but keep in mind that it can get chilly! My favorite spot is the park. Whether it’s your local park, a meadow or even your back yard. Its usually the easiest, most flexible option.

Grab a Blanket

A blanket is key so you’re not sitting in the dirt or grass. Not only will it keep your clothes clean, it’s more comfortable! I love bringing a Serape because it’s great for either the beach or grass. Target also sells a ton of fun options, everything from padded blankets to cozy plaids. You can even buy a blanket with a built in speaker for listening to music!Β If you want to really step up your picnic game, bring some outdoor cushions for people to get comfortable with! If the ground is damp, bring a shower curtain liner and put it underneath your blanket to stay dry!

Pack a Basket

One of the most important parts of packing for a picnic is the basket. Instead of throwing everything into a bag, use a picnic basket! I found a great picnic basket that is stocked with utensils, plates & cups. It’s also insulated, so it keeps all of my cold items chilled! If your picnic basket isn’t insulated, I recommend bringing a small insulated bag for your drinks and items that need to stay cool.

Depending on what your basket comes stocked with, other great things to bring include:

I feel like this is the showstopper. The food you bring totally sets the mood for the entire picnic. It can be difficult to decide where to begin, but here are a few suggestions.

  • Bite sized appetizers are key. Creating the perfect cheese plateΒ is always a crowd pleaser. I like bringing tons of snacks like olives, chips, dips, crackers, nuts, etc. If you want to bring something more substantial, I recommend pre-making sandwiches. They’re easy to pack, easy to eat & won’t get ruined traveling.
  • Sweet treats are also a great addition. My marble oreos travel well and are totally instagram worthy. I’m also obsessed with Hail Merry desserts because they come prepackaged and are totally to die for.
  • Delicious drinks are a picnic staple. I like bringing a bottle of wine, or even mini champagne in a can! Don’t forget to bring water and non-alcoholic beverages as well!

You’re ready for your picnic! I also recommend bringing some fun & games with you! Whether it’s a bluetooth speaker to listen to music, a frisbee or a set of travel checkers, it will take your picnic to the next level and keep everyone entertained!
