5 Tips for Stressing Less During the Holidays
We’re in the home stretch. The holidays are in full swing and most of us just have a few gatherings and parties left. For me, the week before Christmas is always the most stressful. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what your plans entail, the holidays can be stressful for anyone.
I know we’re all supposed to be focused on being thankful and spreading holiday cheer. But there are so many other factors that come into play that can totally stress us out. Whether we have to deal with financial stress, less than pleasant family members, the loss of a loved one or even dealing with overwhelming amounts of people.
Tips for How To Stress Less During the Holidays
One: Self Care 101
You know I’m big on this. Any time of the year. The term “self-care” is kind of vague. If you haven’t read my self-care checklist. It’s a good place to start.
Just because you need to wrap 8 million presents doesn’t mean you should forget about yourself. Don’t forget to eat well and get outside. If you’re totally burnt out, it makes it hard to enjoy the little things. A little self-care goes a long way.
Two: Boundaries are Crucial
Here’s a crazy idea… you’re allowed to say no! Or at least remember that you don’t have to commit to everything. It’s totally reasonable not to attend every party or help everyone with their last minute shopping.
The key is to reduce stress. If you agree to do things you don’t really want to do, you’ll end up more overwhelmed. You aren’t expected to have infinite amounts of time or money. There’s nothing wrong with knowing your limits and communicating them to your friends and fam.
Three: Focus On Yourself
I mean it… you do you. Even if it’s for 30 minutes. When I’m stressed, it’s really important for me to schedule exercise into my schedule. I set aside an hour a day to focus on myself and zone out at the gym.
Think about all of the awesome ways you can treat yourself in 30 minutes to recharge:
- Have a DIY Spa Session! Spend a few minutes and recharge in the comfort of your own bathroom.
- Listen to some music. Zone out and listen to your favorite band. If you’re looking for some new jams, check out my top 20 bands!
- Read a book. Spend a little R&R time learning something new or retreating in a good book! If you need some new reads, check out Amazon for a ton of books and e-book options!
- Take a bath. Similar to a spa session… just hop in. While you’re at it, throw in a bath bomb!
Four: Take a Social Media Break
I’m all about social media vacations. Sometimes it’s important to focus on what’s in front of you, rather than what other people are doing.
Instead of checking to see what your bff got for Christmas, or zooming in on your long lost high school friend’s new engagement ring, take a look at what’s going on around you.
Sometimes, it’s really hard to see other people’s social media posts when you’re not in a good headspace. If the holidays are a tough time for you, consider the effects of seeing other people posting their accomplishments and glory. Maybe it’s better to ignore your Instagram notifications and limit your viewing time.
Five: Create a “Gratitude Journal”
Ok I know that sounds super lame. But sometimes getting everything out in writing is really helpful. I’m all about making lists. I’m also the queen of post it notes. I like to spend some time when I’m feeling overwhelmed writing down the positive things going on around me.
Practice gratitude by writing down the things, people & events in your live that you’re grateful for. No matter how big or small, they’ll help improve your mindset. When you’re in a tough spot, reread your notes! Grab a journal and get grateful!
