Family Vacay: W Hotel Punta Mita de Mexico
As you guys know, Mexico is one of my favorite vacation destinations. Not only is it a quick flight from San Diego, you can go almost any time of year and have great weather. I visited Punta Mita over the summer with my Dad, Sister and Doug and couldn’t wait to plan another trip to bring Tony. Punta de Mita is a fishing village/resort area on the Pacific coast. It’s nestled into a small peninsula on Banderas Bay. There are tons of beautiful homes, golf courses and private beaches.
Punta de Mita Vacation at the W Punta de Mita
We stayed at one of the most amazing (I kid you not) hotels I’ve ever been to. The W Punta de Mita resort is basically what my dream home would look like (obviously on a larger scale). The resort was about a 45 minute drive from the Puerto Vallarta airport. The hotel is kind of ultra-modern meets traditional Mexico. If you’re looking for a low key, somewhat trendy resort, this has your name written all over it. While there were kids, I would say it’s more adult focused. I think it would be the best fit for couples, bachelor/bachelorette weekends, weddings or a trip with friends. I loved that The W had a more modern/trendy vibe than most hotels in Mexico. There were tons of bright colors, fun artwork & luxe features. It’s got kind of a “surfer chic” aesthetic, including the old turquoise pickup truck turned ceviche bar!
Sneak Peek into our Room
Ok, so the hotel was amazing. But our room was NEXT LEVEL. Not only did it have a massive comfy bed and cool, modern furniture… we had our own patio that looked out over the ocean. But wait, theres more… we had our own jacuzzi on the patio! I felt like a princess. And because that just wasn’t enough, the room also had a giant bath tub with floor to ceiling windows. So you can look out over the ocean while you take a bubble bath or shower. PS, the windows have one way vision so even if someone was out on the patio, they couldn’t see in.
The room also had a front patio with a fun swinging chair. We obviously took advantage of it for some photo ops. The room came stocked with tons of snacks, drinks & a bunch of toiletries (even bug spray)! Another really cool feature is that they have a bunch of razor scooters to ride around. After a long day by the pool, you can grab a scooter and ride back to your room. Super convenient and tons of fun. Doug loved running along side it!
The Food
I loved that the hotel had a ton of options for food. One of the main restaurants, Venazú, is where we went for breakfast every morning. They had an awesome breakfast buffet and omelette station. There were tons of traditional Mexican and American options. I opted for all of the Mexican food I could get my hands on. They also serve a ton of options for lunch and dinner. We primarily ate outdoors because we had Doug and loved being able to look out at the beach/ocean while we ate.
The Wet Deck served poolside snacks and meals. Oh and cocktails, duh. My fave drink was the Bahia Sunset, which combined vodka, sparkling wine, raspberry & lychee. We ordered tacos for lunch almost every day and they didn’t disappoint!
The Chevycheria is literally one of the COOLEST restaurant ideas I’ve ever seen. They turned an old 1950’s Chevy truck into a ceviche bar! Get it “Chevy-cheria”!? Not only does it give you an oceanfront spot to take in the view, they serve some amazing fresh ceviche and beer!
My favorite restaurant was definitely Spice Market. Oddly enough, it was some of the best Thai/Vietnamese/Malaysian street cuisine I’ve ever had. It was super creative and not your traditional meal. The restaurant is also absolutely stunning. The mirrored ceiling and glass dome made it feel like we were in a super fancy, exclusive night club.
The Spa
The highlight of the trip was definitely our spa experience. I kid you not, the outdoor spa area was so insanely pretty I felt like it was a mirage. The spa is set in the jungle and surrounded by trees and flowers. We opted to get our massages together and the room we were in looked out over the jungle through open walls. The massage beds were on top of glass cutouts in the floor so you can see a fishpond below.
After your massage, you can use their outdoor pool area. They have hot and cold plunge pools, jacuzzi’s and a pool that features tons of stand up jets. Basically, there are little alcoves you can go into that activate different types of jets and showers. It was so much fun and so relaxing.
Other Hotel Highlights
- When you arrive, a super fancy, decorated golf cart picks you up (and gives you drinks) and drives you to the welcome desk. They also pick you up and bring your bags to your room.
- Every room has a private patio or balcony.
- The “Living Room” is a cocktail bar in the center of the hotel with tons of comfy couches and lounge chairs.
- By the pool, there are tons of full-sized, canopied daybeds perfect for lazing the day away. I was super excited that there were tons of spots with shade (because vampire life).
- The infinity pool is super mellow and looks out over the private beach. The water is relatively calm and easy to swim in unlike a lot of other resorts nearby.
- If you want to leave the resort, there are tons of fun activities like sailing, snorkeling, hiking, zip-line and jungle tours.
- The resort is dog friendly! Doug got his own dog bed, bowls, treats & toy!
