The Revenge Guide to Eating Like an American: Best Food in Washington

Erin and Tony at the Lincoln Memorial plus the best food in WashingtonWhoa, whoa, whoa… I’M BACK! If you hadn’t noticed, I took a little “blog break” this past week. Primarily because I was on vacation, and wanted to just relax. Sometimes it’s really important to just disconnect. As much as I love work and my blog, my brain just needed a second to recharge. That being said, I realized I totally forgot to post a recap from my quick stop in Washington, D.C.! It feels like a lifetime ago, but was literally only like 2 weeks ago.

I posted about my time in North CarolinaĀ but totally spaced on the rest of the trip when I got home. I was home for literally 24 hours before I went to Mexico. Don’t worry, there will be a TON of Mexico pics coming soon, complete with Doug in a Hawaiian shirt on the beach.

There are a few directions I could take this post. I could give a generic overview of all of the monuments I saw. Not to downplay it, because it was amazing. Literally made me feel like putting on my American Flag swimsuit to soak in all of the history. I could give my recommendations on places to see, but I feel like that’s pretty standard.

So instead, I’m going to give you:Ā The Revenge Guide to Eating Like an American: TheĀ Best Food in Washington. Oh, and overload you with a ton of touristy pictures in between. Because, why not?

Ben’s Chili Bowl

Their chili dogs will make you rethink what you’ve been eating all of your life. A D.C. staple sinceĀ 1958, known for it’s late night hot smokes. I recommend stopping here after a few drinks, on your way back to the hotel. And don’t forget to order a milkshake!

Stoney’s

I’ve heard legends about the Super Grilled Cheese at Stoney’s, but had no idea you could get one “Freddy Style”. Do I have your attention yet? THEY STUFF CHICKEN FINGERS INSIDE! That’s right, the grilled cheese has bacon, tomato, onion, cheese & chicken tenders all in one tasty sandwich!

Ted’s Bulletin

I’m going to get straight & to the point: PEANUT BUTTER BACON POPTARTS. Ted’s makes a ton of homemade pop tarts from strawberry to salted caramel, but when in Rome… get the PBB. Even better? When you order the Big Mark, they give you a pop tart with your eggs & bacon!

Buffalo & Bergen

I love a good Bloody Mary. I also love a good bagel. Make a trip to Buffalo & Bergen and you can get one of the best Bloody Mary’s on the block: the Lox’d and Loaded. TheĀ Spicy Bloody Mary is loaded up with Lox, Cream Cheese, Capers, Red Onion on an Everything Bagel – no wonder it was voted the Best Bloody Mary by Washingtonian Magazine 2015!

District Doughnut

No trip would be complete without a donut / doughnut. Some people collect spoons, others collect shot glassesĀ Ā – I collect donut experiences. I recommend trying the Cannoli & Fluffernutter. You can also order online the night before to guarantee your order. Flavors change, but I guarantee you’ll be glad you made the trip.

The Chickery

Real tasty chicken & sides. Both their slogan and truth.Ā Their chicken fingers are legendary. The sides are the real “bread & butter”; you can order corn bread & gravy, street corn, mashed potatoes, smashed potatoes and so on.

Milk Bar Bakery

We’ve discussed Momofuku before here. It’s what Instagram dreams are made of. No list for the best food in Washington would be complete without it.Ā  Sure you can order ramen or steamed buns from their restaurant, but let’s talk about the desserts from Milk Bar. A few of my favorites: Birthday Cake Soft Serve with Sprinkles, Birthday Cake Truffles & Cereal Milk Ice Cream topped with Cereal Crunch. Fingers crossed someone reads this and get’s me one of their birthday cakes for my next bday! Pro Tip: you can also order their Birthday Cake Truffles and have them shipped to you.
