THE BEST PIZZA IN SAN DIEGO
First things first we need to break down a few sub topics when it comes to eating in San Diego.
There are a ton of different neighborhoods & a ton of different “restaurant genres”.
Since I’m from central San Diego, I normally focus my recommendations here. However San Diego County is huge & encompasses a ton of other towns. I don’t normally drive much further than La Jolla, so you won’t see a ton of recommendations from North County areas like Encinitas or Oceanside.
Here are the neighborhoods I normally visit:
- North Park
- Normal Heights
- Kensington
- Pacific Beach
- Mission Beach
- Ocean Beach
- La Jolla
- Bankers Hill
- Hillcrest
- Little Italy
- Gaslamp Quarter
- East Village
- Point Loma
- Coronado
- South Park
- La Mesa
- Mission Hills
- City Heights
- Golden Hill
- Logan Heights & Barrio Logan
- Chula Vista
- National City
- Kearny Mesa
- Mission Valley
- Bay Park
The Best Pizza Spots in San Diego
Guess what?! I even made a map for you guys! Whether you’re looking for gourmet pizza or a quick, classic slice – there are so many tasty options!
TRIBUTE PIZZA:
Located in North Park, Tribute Pizza opened up right in front of where Tony & I used to live – at an old Post Office turned live/work complex! They cook up deliciousness in a 1500 lb Renato wood fired oven & even have a reverse osmosis system to ensure the water is perfect for making pizza!
BUONA FORCHETTA
Lucky for you, there are a few different Buona Forchetta options you can stop in at! With locations in South Park, Point Loma (Liberty Station), Coronado & Encinitas, they serve up the perfect dine-in and takeout wood fired Neapolitan pizzas!
ISOLA PIZZA BAR
Another woodfired option in La Jolla, Isola’s creamy burrata & basil pizza is one of my favorites! They also serve up a ton of other great dishes like my favorite cacio e pepe in San Diego! They even have a custom, mosaic tiled pizza oven brought over directly from Naples.
PIZZERIA LUIGI
Stop in at one of Pizzeria Luigi’s locations in Golden Hill, North Park or Imperial Beach for a quick pizza by the slice, or a giant pizza and side of their special pesto pasta! I can’t get enough of their “White Girl” pizza, aka chicken, bacon & spicy ranch!
BASIC BAR & PIZZA
First of all, if you’re looking for catering in San Diego – you need to call Basic to reserve their mobile pizza truck. They even make a mashed potato pizza, topped with mozzarella and bacon – need I say more? For dine in, just head to East Village – in downtown San Diego.
THE FRIENDLY
The Friendly serves up some of my favorite pizza & burgers in San Diego. It’s a great no frills neighborhood shop in North Park where you can grab a quick slice at a reasonable price.
BARBUSA
Located in Little Italy, Barbusa is a great spot for a pizza date night – whether you’re looking for a more gourmet style or classic favorite. They also have a lot of great vegan and gluten-free options!
MONELLO
If you follow me on Instagram, you know Monello is one of my all time favorite “special occasion” Italian restaurants in San Diego because they have a giant cheese wheel for their tableside pasta service. But the Little Italy restaurant also has the most perfect pizza dough I’ve ever tried – they import their yeast & flour from Italy and bake it in a brick lined gas oven. It’s definitely a must-try spot!
REGENTS PIZZERIA
Another great option in La Jolla, Regents Pizzeria has a great assortment of drafts, appetizers, sandwiches, salads and you guessed it… pizzas! They serve both whole pies & by the slice, with tons of options from NY-style to Chicago deep-dish and Chicago style pies.
PANDEMIC PIZZA
Pandemic Pizza is one of the newer restaurants on the list – literally opening during the pandemic… but it’s quickly become my go to spot for ordering pizza delivery. I love that they donate $1 from each pizza sold to a local charity too! Do yourself a favor and add an order of garlic knots and pandemic wings to your your order, with a side of black garlic ranch – you’ll thank me later.
sicilian thing
Surprisingly, there aren’t’ a lot of Sicilian Style pizza shops in San Diego. And if you couldn’t tell by the name, Sicilian Thing does just that! Located in North Park, I recommend stopping by on a Tuesday when you can get two slices of pizza and a beer for $12.99!
AMBROGIO15
Another spot so good, they had to expand! With spots in Pacific Beach & Little Italy, you’ll be able to visit their Del Mar spot soon too. Ambrogio15 uses Petra flour imported from Veneto & a 48 hour rising process for their dough. The result: super thin, melt in your mouth crust. You can order whtie, whole wheat or gluten free too!
BLIND LADY
Blind Lady Ale House is one of Tony’s favorite spots – I love that they have extra crispy thin crust! There’s definitely a reason it’s one of the busiest spots in Normal Heights for pizza and beer.
BRONX PIZZA
Looking for New York style pizza on the west coast? Bronx Pizza is known for serving up classic, NY style pies in Hillcrest. They also have some killer in house specialties and calzones.
