I’m not a morning person. Most of the time, I have to force myself to wake up after setting 8 alarms within 2 minutes of each other. Even though I’m self employed and work from home, I’ve made a conscious effort to wake up at the same time every day and create a morning routine. Not only does it help me stay more productive, but I feel way better. There are 5 things I do every single morning that don’t take a ton of time. But help me start my day the right way!

5 Things I Do Every Single Morning

Ok this isn’t some “getting ready with me” post. Obviously some days I’m more aggressive with my hair and makeup. Others I just slap on a little lotion and some yoga pants. Regardless, I make sure I do 5 simple things that help me not only look good, but feel good!

I’m all about doing things that are practical, save me time, save me money, etc. But also finding ways to do things and products that help me multitask.

First Things First, I Brush My Teeth

Before I drink my coffee or check my emails or social media, I hustle to the bathroom and brush my teeth. I can’t stand the way my mouth feels in the morning pre-teeth cleaning. Let alone stinky morning breath.

I’m going to be honest, I’m also extremely picky when it comes to toothbrushes. You could say I’m kind of “boujee on a budget”. I personally prefer an electric toothbrush. I just don’t feel like the old school basic toothbrushes make my mouth feel clean.

I recently found the best toothbrush and it’s actually totally affordable. GLEEM just launched a new, sleek power toothbrush that only costs $25. For reference – some other brands power toothbrushes cost close to $200, which is totally insane in my opinion.

GLEEM also comes in white or black. I personally love the black version, it feels a little extra edgy and I like the way it looks in our bathroom. Obviously a toothbrush’s primary function is to clean your mouth, but I love that both the white and black GLEEM brushes actually look cool.

For $25, you get either a black or white brush & travel case. The travel case is handy for keeping it clean. Instead of throwing it in with your other toiletries and making a mess, it keeps it protected. It’s battery operated, so you don’t have to worry about charging it or having to buy a new one when it runs out of charge. You just pop a AAA battery in and those sonic vibrations will start to polish your teeth!

GLEEM brushes also have a built in timer, which is super handy. The brush pulses every 30 seconds two minutes so you evenly brush both sides of your mouth and the top and bottom teeth. Β

Quality Doug Time

After I take care of my morning breath, I always take care of my Doug. I swear, spending a few minutes with our dog in the morning is the best way to start any day.

Obviously he needs attention, but so do I! Playing with him and getting morning smooches always puts me in a better mood.

Drink At Least 16 Ounces of Water

You’re probably thinking that seems oddly specific. Why 16 ounces and not 15 ounces? First of all 16 ounces is 2 cups (for anyone who missed the conversion lesson in school).

Imagine not drinking any water (or liquids) for the next eight hours. Well, that’s basically what you did while you were asleep. While you sleep, your body slowly becomes dehydrated. Even if you don’t wake up gasping for water, your body needs it.

Drinking a large, cold glass of water after you wake up has also fires up your metabolism and helps flush toxins. And my favorite reason to pound water when I wake up… your brain tissue is 75% water! When you’re not properly hydrated, your brain operates on less fuel. Which can make you feel drained and affect your mood.

I Take My Morning Vitamins

I know, I sounds like a total mom. “Don’t forget to drink water and take your vitamins”.

Every morning, I take a multivitamin and a few supplements. Some supplements are better taken with food, throughout the day, at night, etc. But others are better for you in the morning & on an empty stomach.

I take an iron supplement before anything else because the caffeine in coffee and calcium in dairy can interfere with its absorption. Iron supplements help with the production of red blood cells, boosts immune function, improves cognitive development & is important for cell growth.

Probiotics are another must on an empty stomach. I love taking them for digestion. They’re also great for gut health and fighting bacteria. I have a pretty sensitive stomach and have found probiotics keep me from getting food poisoning, especially when we travel.

Ice Roll My Face

Most random morning hack: ice rolling. The day I got an ice roller, my life changed forever. I literally can’t live without it and do it every single morning.

If you’ve never heard of it, it’s basically a hand held, chilled face roller. I keep mine in the freezer and whip it out when I’m reading emails in the morning.

From a scientific standpoint, cold temperatures cause constriction in the skin, resulting in a shrinking effect on the appearance of pores and blood vessels. This creates smoother, more even skin tone over time. I also like using it because it soothes inflammation and irritation. Think: skin sensitivity, puffy eyes, pimples, scars, redness, etc. Β

I start by rolling it across my forehead and temples (always in an upward motion). Then work my way down (still upward motions) around my eyes, cheeks, mouth and jaw. Then downwards on my neck to boost lymphatic drainage.

Some other things I do to boost my mood and productivity in the morning:

Listen to music while I shower. Drink a piping hot cup of coffee. I live for spray tans because I feel like I don’t wear as much makeup when I’ve got a little glow. Spend a few minutes stretching. Visualize my day. Remind myself of things that I’m grateful for.
