5 Steps for Accomplishing Your Goals
Going after your dreams and accomplishing goals seams like a daunting task. But it can actually be pretty simple if you’re open to it!
Most of the time, we make things a lot harder for ourselves because we’re scared, not ready for change or not willing to be open minded.
The trick is: just go for it. Get out of your head, let go of your misconceptions and ideas of how it could go wrong, free your mind and go for it.
Step One: Pick a Goal (or Goals)
If you’re like me, picking a goal is pretty overwhelming. It’s like trying to decide what toppings to get on your frozen yogurt. In order to know what you want, you have to really tune into your gut and figure out what your dreams are.
One of the most important parts of choosing a goal is believing in yourself. Get out of your own head and believe that you’re capable of anything. No one is perfect. Everyone’s gone through their fair share of problems, mishaps, missteps and speed bumps. The most important part of choosing a goal is knowing that anything is possible and you should never settle. We all have unique goals and aspirations, so there’s no limit to what we’re capable of and what will make us feel fulfilled.
The first thing you need to do once you determine a goal is write it down. Maybe it’s as simple as writing it on a post it note and putting it on your desk. Or, maybe you need to make a giant vision board. Seriously, get piece of cardboard and some magazines & create an inspiration board. Put that note or vision board somewhere that you’ll see it EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Maybe you don’t have a specific goal yet, but a general idea of what you want your life to look like. Create some sort of visual that will help you stay inspired and keep that positive energy flowing daily. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Step Two: Say Goodbye to Negative Nancy’s
It sucks, but there will always be people who have negative opinions or want to rain on your parade. Can I tell you how many people told me being a full time blogger was a stupid idea? Even people in my family, to this day, don’t get it.
The only way you can actually fail is by not trying. Maybe your goal is huge or doesn’t make sense to other people, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Never let someone else’s opinion or negativity get in the way of your goals.
Step Three: Find a Mentor
A mentor doesn’t have to be someone you know or have met. Find someone doing what you want to do or something similar to your goal to prove to yourself that it’s possible.
My main inspiration is The Pioneer Woman. Girl’s got a successful blog which she’s snowballed into a cooking show, brand & products sold at Walmart. If she can do it, I can do it! We’re not the same person & my goals aren’t to copy her or do exactly what she’s done, but because she’s achieved similar things that I want to, I know it’s actually possible!
Study this person or people and learn from them. How did they get to where they are? What did they do right? What did they do wrong along the way?
Step Four: Recruit Backup
Tune into those people around us who are positive influences and want to see us fulfill our goals.
If you don’t have anyone in your life that you feel like you can get support from, find other people to help. Maybe it means getting involved in new activities or meeting new people.
It’s easy to try to keep our goals a secret. Sometimes we revert to keeping our goals private because we’re embarrassed or not confident. But it’s important to remember that finding other people to help lift us up and keep us inspired can make a goal become reality. Let other people in and help give you feedback, new perspectives and reassurance. Having someone to bounce ideas off of is a really helpful way to solidify goals and plans.
Step Five: Be Open to Change
Goals change, but that doesn’t mean they’re failures. Sometimes, it takes having an initial goal, that transforms into a new, even bigger and more exciting one.
I never expected to have this blog. I was just selling cookies. And then sharing some recipes. As it evolved, I stayed open minded and transformed my goals into new, exciting and more progressive ones.
As much as we achieve, learn and know, it’s important to always be open to learning more and growing.
